weird and wonderful coming of age story. fantastic animation, great music, funny in its absurdity, and left me kinda emotional by the end of it. confusing and difficult to follow at times but it does a great job of evoking a very specific set of feelings. lots of cool robots too

ENA Dream BBQ
beautiful piece of abstract art. you can tell there was so much care and effort put into everything. completely unpredictable, had absolutely no idea what was going on. 10/10

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Incredibly blunt. Viciously incisive. Very funny in a 'nervously laughing while holding your head in your hands and whispering what the fuuuuck' kind of way. a bit depressing at how relevant the satire still feels today

Liveship Traders book two: The Mad Ship
I read these ages ago when I was a teen but even decades later and knowing most of the story beats I'm still utterly gripped by them. they have some rough edges but just absolutely engrossing character writing all the way through

This style of light doesn't really appear in animation anymore. You know it when you see it -- it's bright, hot and almost dangerous.

Our new issue explores the tricks behind it, and how one artist has revived the look for the digital age: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/dangerous-...

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Watched by Branson Reese 28 Apr 2022

Abrams isn't a man so much as he's an avatar of cultural entropy. If you make something popular enough eventually you will die or sell it off and and a person in thick rimmed glasses whose main artistic vision is that he loves to have meetings will take it and sandblast it until it's nothing. I hate to see this happen here but maybe it's good that this happened. Maybe every franchise should collapse into a version of itself that makes shareholders nod and shake each others' hands. We should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend.

Record of Lodoss War
It's Not Good. It's based on a ttrpg campaign and it shows. super derivative, the plot is clumsy and feels improvised off the cuff from scene to scene, the pacing is awful, and budget/time was clearly running out towards the end. but it's bad in a kinda charming way

Liveship Traders book one: Ship of Magic
the author is exceptional at writing wonderfully, believably flawed characters, and the otherworldly magic of the setting only enhances the very mundane, human emotions driving the plot which gut punches you with Feelings at multiple points throughout

I suspect that this movie isn't very historically accurate, but it did make me laugh

WH40k Rogue Trader
great application of the 40k setting and lore. combat was super satisfying; never got tired of obliterating people with a twenty round burst from a heavy bolter. really enjoyed the first half of the game or so but it did start to drag and writing wasn't as tight towards the end.

An illustration depicting a young boy sadly reading a book. The pages fly around him, forming the armor of a giant golden knight that serves as a protective shell. Arrows are stuck on the armor, while the knight stands on one knee, vigilantly holding a sword.

An image of a figure sitting cross legged on a carpet on a street corner. The character is wearing a fine jacket with a shawl draped over a horse skull where her head should be. She's holding a railspike as a divining pendulum, in front of her is an open pocket watch, a bowl with little trinkets thrown out as if she's reading the future from them, and a small bowl with coins. There are silhouettes in front of her that are watching her tell fortunes. There are speech bubbles that read:
Fortune teller: "Hm. Weal. Good fortune, but-"
Person off-screen: "But what?"
Fortune teller: "Not only good. Something is about to happen."
Person off-screen: "Wait, good or bad?"
Fortune teller: "I can't tell. Just something Big. You need to be on this train."

Portent makes coins by acting as a seer to afford travel. It's 50% making shit up and 50% genuine chronomancy. Sometimes she does actually see things. This is supposed to be her using the spell Augury.

Wake Up Dead Man
Not as good as the first, still kept me engaged the whole way through. Felt like we didn't really get to know the suspects as well as the previous films but the set up of all the pieces of the mystery and the fakeouts and the hints were really good.

Bubblegum Crisis
could not be more front and centre with its blade runner/terminator influences. narratively it's an absolute mess and the story goes exactly nowhere, but the animation was pretty good and it had some cool retro-future cyber tech dystopia visuals

delightful collection of loosely connected stories. otherworldly. occasionally fucked up. frequently horny. really beautiful, evocative descriptions and imagery.
