Volunteer Group Documents Smithsonian Wall Text as Trump Administration Presses Cultural Review Historians and volunteers document Smithsonian wall labels after the Trump administration calls for reviews of museum content.

Amid concerns that the Trump administration seeks to interfere with information presented at Smithsonian museums, two Georgetown University historians recruited hundreds of volunteers to photograph and archive publicly accessible wall text throughout the Smithsonian.

Long-delayed Jan. 6 plaque honoring police quietly erected overnight at Capitol The memorial honoring officers who defended the Capitol was required by law to be installed by March 2023.

No ceremony, just the hope of Republicans that no one will notice or remember what happened on January 6, 2021. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

β€œI’m too smart to read … I need chaosss.” Who IS this person? Genuinely befuddled. And so sad for him. Bless his heart.

I just want people to read Madison on the free exercise of conscience. And maybe Mason. And then Jefferson.

For funsies, my AMST comps were in:

1. US History (long 19thC social & cultural mostly)
2. US labor & immigration studies
3. US material culture

These categories mask how it was β€œAmerican studies” with anthropology, sociology, too.

(Bob Gross, Michael Kazin, Margaretta Lovell led committee.)

I shouldn’t be surprised but here I am, surprised. And my 3rd year will be so dismayed.

In the darkness, the arts provide light. Last night’s performance by Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields at the Paramount Theater in Cville was so moving. And the first row seats were surprisingly great!

That’s right, faster but never better. And what are people doing with all that time they imagine AI will save, while the environment and climate deteriorate? The examples they offer (more time for research or more leisure are common) kill my soul.

We are going through a state required audit of all scores and credit awards to see whether we are in compliance with state policy. (Another form of pressure.)

Everyday, I am more shocked and appalled by supposedly β€œsmart” people saying it’s β€œsmart” to farm out their intellectual development to AI.

About 25% of freshmen historically entered my univ with credit for our composition course. Just to give an example of impact. I expect that percentage has increased due to rising pressure on high schools from AP plus dual enrollment.

So, it’s the time of year when many departments review AP scores for the next catalog. Good to pass this along to colleagues to see where the increases are, where your campus may be feeling the effects.

I’ve also moved back into the colonial era to document my mom’s Irish roots, which run back to Irish Quakers who settled in Salem County, NJ & New Castle County, PA. One of them served in the 1st Delaware & was in the last boat that followed Washington crossing the Delaware! ☘️☘️☘️

My research into the Irish in Delaware continues with deep forays into Wilmington’s Irish, including my Mulrooney ancestors, who worked in the city’s Morocco shops, making fine leather for gloves and bookbindings. They became small business owners eventually, like my g-grandpop, who emigrated 1872:

March is when I give interviews about the Irish in Delaware, the subject of my first book. The Irish who worked for the du Ponts making black powder differed significantly from Famine refugees and so alter what we think we β€œknow” about the Irish in 19thC America.
