Some were just getting stuck whenever a marauder spawned. I didn't know what to do on my first encounter, and I died so many times. It was game breaking, design-wise. Then videos about how to beat them consistently started to pop up, because well, people needed it. Even wikis mention it.

The sudden rules you must follow when encountering a marauder in the middle of the game certainly raised some eyebrows. It was a weird design choice that slowed down the pace of the game. But it works in the dark ages when established from the get-go.
