OCASIO-CORTEZ STATEMENT ON TRUMP'S COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAN "The American people are once again dragged into a war they did not want by a president who does not care about the long-term consequences of his actions. This war is unlawful. It is unnecessary. And it will be catastrophic. "Just this week, Iran and the United States were negotiating key measures that could have staved off war. The President walked away from these discussions and chose war instead.President Trump flippantly acknowledged the possibility of American casualties, stating "that often happens in war.' "Mr. President: this was not an inevitability. This is a deliberate choice of aggression when diplomacy and security were within reach. Stop lying to the American people. "Violence begets violence. We learned this lesson in Iraq. We learned this lesson in Afghanistan. And we are about to learn it again in Iran. Bombs have yet to create enduring democracies in the region and this will be no different. "In moments of war, our Constitution is unambiguous: Congress authorizes war. The President does not. I will do my part to uphold our Constitution by voting YES on Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie's War Powers Resolution. Every member of Congress must join us in rejecting this aimless war.
My statement on President Trumpβs combat operations in Iranβ¬οΈ
I know this feels pointless but everyone has to call their congressional reps and say they oppose war with Iran and they oppose Trump illegally starting one without congressional approval β both

Thrilled to share our new paper out in @science.org, led by FranΓ§ois Leroy and Petr Keil! Using the Breeding Bird Survey, we document not only a continent-wide decline in bird abundance since the 1980s β but, crucially, the acceleration of these declines over time. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

"Everybody rushed in saying these things are magical; theyβre gonna save us hours. Those savings did not materialize...Whatβs the return on investment of saving six minutes per day?β
Sounds familiar...but scarier, given that it's healthcare w/ no oversight body to verify ANYTHING.
Where will novel fire regimes threaten birds? Our paper in @natcomms.nature.com shows that most bird diversity hotspots facing future high-sev fire occur in places that historically burned at low severity - a critical mismatch. These are the spots to focus restoration.

Was it COVID? That is a few years from the onset of the pandemic where the circle highlights.
The science is clear. The stakes are real.
AGU condemns the repeal of the EPA Endangerment Finding β a decision that rejects the overwhelming evidence and undermines climate accountability.
We will continue to defend science and advocate for evidence-based policy.

I did not expect to see this in the WSJ:

Agreed!

Nothing wrong with being anthropocentric! I think (as with all science), we have a bias towards what is easy to measure. My only argument is we should couch our findings in the knowledge that we will miss ecosystem functions simply because we donβt measure for them (yet)
