I'm from rural Florida and was a keen outdoorsman in my younger days, so the only non-human animals that frighten me are feral Eurasian swine. I've been treed by a pack of them. Terrifying. Could make for a good story.

Best really depends on the story, I think. A mule is a major character in my novel in progress. My new book of short stories uses snails as an image—but the snails are also the stars.

I won't claim to have subverted character tropes in any terribly meaningful way. My main character is a small, mixed-raced woman in what's essentially a fantasy-horror-western set in the Deep South. I think what I'm doing is unique, but I can point to clear antecedents.

The protagonist of my novel in progress is of Black and Florida Cracker ancestry. She's a hunter in post-Civil War frontier Florida. She kills a lot of people. Helps other people. Her progress is an odyssey from cow country to the city and also a sort of philosophical progress.
