π Great to see Climate and Nature Crisis Caucus Vice-Chair @pippaheylings.bsky.social holding the Government to account for refusing to publish the full national security report on global biodiversity loss. The UK must act with urgency to protect our economy, health, food security and our safety.

The US-Iran conflict shows just how dangerous dependence on oil & gas really is.
Like with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, this crisis reveals how gas prices can soar leaving us vulnerable to price shocks beyond our control.
Developing clean energy can free us from Trump's geopolitical blackmail.

We're seeing the same in Trump's America. Cancelling clean energy projects cut 38,031 manufacturing jobs and caused over $30bn in losses last year. As gas prices spike in light of the conflict in the Middle East, green energy is needed to protect households and businesses from volatile prices. (3/3)

The green economy is essential to the UK's economic performance. The latest ONS stats show that the low-carbon and renewable economy grew 12% in 2024. Employment has increased by over 50% since 2015.
Reform's answer? Screw jobs, screw growth, screw investment, and screw the planet. (2/3)

If it's true that Reform's Robert Jenrick told a business audience that renewable companies are "screwed" if Reform get in, that tells you everything about their readiness to inflict national self-harm in an ideological war on climate action. (1/3)

Gas prices π again π₯
As the price of natural gas spikes across Europe for the fourth time in the last five years, think on the myth-peddling Reform and Conservatives who want to abandon renewable energy and rely even more on gas - and Trumpβs gas at that!

That's why this week I backed @pippaheylings.bsky.social Bill calling for our chalk streams to be nominated as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, giving them the status and protection they deserve for future generations.

As I write, sewage is pouring into three rivers in my constituency β the River Itchen, the River Meon and the River Hamble.
In the first seven weeks of 2026, sewage has been flowing into the River Itchen for over 400 hours and counting in just one monitoring site, near Headbourne Worthy. This is a protected and rare chalk stream that runs right through the centre of the city of Winchester.
The River Itchen is one of just six chalk streams in England that support the endangered Atlantic Salmon population, which is currently laying eggs needed for the species' survival. Project White Hart, the campaign to save this species, has warned that a single major event could be catastrophic.
In the River Meon, there have been over 500 confirmed sewage dumps this year alone. This is happening where beavers have recently been reintroduced, and the sewage flows right through the South Downs National Park. A recent report from the South Downs National Park Authority found that 90% of the park's rivers are not meeting a good standard for nature. If we cannot protect nature and landscapes in our National Parks, how can the public have confidence in our ability to protect them anywhere?
Action on this cannot wait.
Failure to protect Hampshireβs chalk streams will lead to ecological catastrophe. These habitats are exceptionally rare, rich in biodiversity, support unique flora and fauna, and are impossible to recreate or replace.
Will the government introduce an immediate package of support to clean up the sewage spills that have poured into Hampshireβs rivers this winter and commit to an urgent meeting with me to act on these spills and safeguard our chalk streams from future discharges?
In the first seven weeks of 2026, sewage has been flowing into the River Itchen for over 400 hours and counting - and that was in just one monitoring site.
This is unacceptable. If we fail to protect chalk streams now, we risk losing them forever.

π Great to see Climate and Nature Crisis Caucus Vice-Chair @pippaheylings.bsky.social introduce a Bill to protect chalk streams today in Parliament. We urge the Government to support her plan before we irreversibly harm these globally rare habitats.

My Bill would give chalk streams the legal protections they deserve.
Our rivers and streams are as much a part of our national identity as our greatest cathedrals and monuments. It's time we treated them that way. Read

And of course we need climate resilience to be central to all planning whether of new homes or national infrastructure. We shouldnβt be building on flood plains and our planning system should be ensuring that doesnβt happen - because the costs and damage down the line are huge otherwise.

The UK should be acting urgently to strengthen flood protections and support nature-based flood management and sustainable drainage systems. Flooding and extreme weather will only continue to damage households and communities due to climate breakdown. We urgently need to act.

@shaunspiers1.bsky.social also calls out Reform's disinformation, "Richard Tice seems intent on turning away billions of pounds of investment and baking in our dependence on imported fossil fuels. Someone should wake him up and let him know that it's the twenty-first century, not the 1950s."

βMyth peddlingβ: Reform UK pledges to remove βdaftβ energy regulations
The deputy leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice, has been given a new role focusing on energy policy, through which he has pledged to remove βthe daft, the dither and the delaying regulationsβ.
Enough of myth peddling!
This article on Reform's energy pledges highlights my concerns on Richard Tice's regressive energy policies. "This idea that more oil and gas is going to get bills down is blatant myth peddling... It's misleading."

The truth is Reform UK's climate-denying agenda is putting ideology ahead of evidence, public safety, and security. It will push up bills, make the world a more dangerous place, and leave Britain weaker and more exposed. If we are serious about keeping our country safe, we must do the oppositeΒ (4/5)
