We said "more low stakes fantasy!" and publishing gave us conflict-free cozies. But what *I* personally meant was, instead of saving THE WORLD from A GREAT EVIL, the character maybe saves their forest or their lil tavern or whatever. The idea that low stakes = no stakes is such a weird development
A concretion preserving the earbones and auditory region of Herpetocetus, here looking basically like a rock with some patches of calcareous algae and other tidepool growths on it. The acid bath, in 10% acetic acid, has just begun, and many bubbles of carbon dioxide can be seen.
The same chunk after about a month of acid preparation. There is about 5-6 mm of sandstone missing that has now been etched away; it is a dark bluish gray sandstone and the bone is a dark brown, changing to a light brown after etching.
There is now well over a centimeter of sandstone that has been dissolved away, exposing much more of the bone.
A skull fragment of a dwarf baleen whale preserving the auditory region, about 20 x 10 cm, with milk chocolate colored bone and a bit of resistant sandstone left inside the "cranial hiatus", a large sinus in the base of the skull that partially houses the inner ear bone. The inner ear bone is articulated and a small hemispherical bump on it houses the cochlea, and even the stapes is preserved.

#fossilfriday Acid preparation is progressing on this dwarf baleen whale (Herpetocetus) skull fragment, and the inner ear bone (periotic) is really shaping up nicely! Certainly one of my slower prep jobs. Purisima Formation, Santa Cruz, CA, ~5 myo. 10% acetic acid.
I think your dryad is adorable with your spin on ears and greenery, there's many more trees that we know today than the ancient Greeks had no nymphs yet for.

Creamy background with a man/bull like figure in white and tan shadow arched over a crumpled figure in reds on the ground. She has a shredded but continuous rope. A fire reflects on both their chests. Earthtones with a bit of neon yellow and green in places. Reds and greens. Simple organic shapes with a bit of texture. Signature Sewzinski stamped to right.
I want to get even more abstract with it, but the Errand into the Maze by Martha Graham made such an impression on me. I need to get the images down before it fades from memory.
