Vi påpekar att påståendet att klimatförändringen entydigt skulle innebära en “guldålder” för Finland inte stöds av vetenskapliga belägg, är vilseledande och riskerar förringa de allvarliga risker vi står inför.
Essäns behandling av biodiversitet präglas av missförstånd. Forskning visar att klimatförändringens hot mot naturen växer snabbt.
Viktigare än artantal är ekosystemens funktion och stabilitet. Dessa bygger på komplexa nätverk av arter vilka tillsammans producerar de ekosystemtjänster vårt samhälle är beroende av.
Och att avfärda oro för naturens tillstånd är att förbise vetenskapliga rön, samhällets beroende av fungerande ekosystem och det värde som människor sätter på den lokala naturen.
Istället behöver vi en nyanserad men vetenskapligt förankrad diskussion om klimatförändringens negativa – och positiva – effekter, med sin tillhörande osäkerhet och sammankoppling med andra globala förändringar.

We also evaluate the intensity of climate risks on > 1000 European species of conservation concern associated with Natura 2000 sites.
In this study, led by collaborators at the Sapienza Università di Roma as part of the NaturaConnect project, we estimated four metrics of future climate risk across Europe and assess the level of climate exposure of European PAs vs. nonprotected control sites.
Large variation in climate exposure for species of conservation concern was revealed, including 11 species that are highly dependent on Natura 2000 sites and predicted to experience rapid climate change.
Our results show large spatial differences in climate change exposure across Europe, with a faster pace and farther shifts in the Boreal, Steppic, and Pannonian regions.

New study led by Jussi Mäkinen out in PNAS! 🤩 🎉
Using several long-term datasets on species in Finland, we show that while most communities have become dominated by warm-affiliated species over time, this is paralleled by a *decrease in thermal diversity*.
