An illustration of a roundish yellow sunflower against the white background of a round sticker or envelope seal. The sticker/seal is about 1.5" in diameter. It is one of 30 such stickers/seals that I recently purchased on eBay for about $2.00. It's always fun to get a snail mail letter with a sticker on the back, isn't it? Especially when it shows a flower at a time of year when flowers are so few. The added security it gives to the envelope is a nice bonus, though I suppose a seasoned criminal could easily grab a letter opener and quickly gain access to the contents. If they ever start making padlocks with illustrations of sunflowers on them, perhaps I'll start securing my envelopes with them instead.

Vintage Washington DC souvenir glass ashtray with a depiction of the US Capitol in the bottom center. If it looks a bit wonky and off-center that's because it is. Fancy fake gold trim around the rim. I bought it for about $3 in May of last year for reasons that now escape me. Oh, wait, now I remember: I bought it because it was round! 4" in diameter. I don't smoke but I don't think I'd feel comfortable flicking ash and crushing my cigarettes out on a major symbol of democracy. Maybe it was designed for members of Congress?

Last night's brilliant checkerset
I've decided I need to order a new, better wall to do my pieces justice. In the meantime, here's a photo I took of last night's checkerset -

Red checker piece. About 1.5" in diameter. It's been many years since I've played checkers but I still have a board and a set of pieces just in case the need to play suddenly arises. Or maybe I keep them because getting rid of them would be the equivalent of getting rid of my childhood. Not that I played checkers much even as a child. It's really not that interesting of a game, is it? And now if I *did* play I'd been inclined to embrace a strict "No Kings!" rule. And having pieces jumping other pieces does little to promote our common humanity, does it? Hmmmm.... Maybe I should just glue the pieces in a happy little black-red-black-red-black-red circle on my wall and move on to negotiating an enduring peace between the two kings on my chessboard....

Today is Michelangelo's birthday (born 1475). He painted this ("Doni Tondo" or "Doni Madonna" - 47.5" in diameter) in about 1507. It's allegedly the most famous round painting in the world. I've never cared much for religious art but this frame (which he may have either made or designed) looks awesome to me. If I ever have enough money to buy it I think I'll use it to frame a drawing of a very round-headed Charlie Brown. Or maybe a NASA photo of the planet Jupiter. Or maybe a doorknob. So many choices!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doni_Tondo
This is the first round painting that I think I ever saw. It's "The Adoration of the Child" (circa 1497) by Florence's Piero di Cosimo (1462-1522) and hangs in the art museum that I visited often in my youth. That a painting could be round came as a startling revelation to me - much more so than any mere virgin birth ever could. For a long time I thought it was the only round painting that was ever painted in the history of the world. I know better now but, as they say, you never forget your first. If I ever buy this one I think the frame will be the perfect holder for an overhead view of a Reese's peanut butter cup. Or maybe a 1940s TV channel-changing knob. (I guess I'll have to consult an art expert and see which they think is the most aesthetically pleasing lest I unknowingly commit some sort of artistic faux pas.)

Overhead view of an opaque plastic storage container holding 50 M&M candies that have just been liberated from a 1.69 oz. bag. The container is 3" in diameter. Each M&M is about half an inch in diameter. A few of the candies may have mysteriously disappeared while going from the bag to the container. A few more may have mysteriously disappeared while I've been writing this. It's as if the Bermuda Triangle has taken up residence in my home! Which is a good thing since each M&M that disappears is an M&M that can't feed my terrible addiction to them. There was a time when I was gobbling down HUNDREDS every day โ but no more. Not since I reached out for help and was directed to the local chocoholics clinic. Each morning I go and they give me a free little cup of generic chocolate syrup that satisfies the monkey on my back and let's me get on with my life without obsessively scouring the streets and back alleyways for my next M&M fix. The M&Ms in this photo are the first I've seen up close in years and I can't believe how ugly they are. The quality of the white M stamped on each one is unbelievably awful. You'd think they were being made by Ford! Fortunately, more are disappearing as I write this. Soon it'll just be me and the container, all alone. That moment can't come soon enough!

The orange flip-top lid to a bottle of Sundown-brand "B Complex" vitamins. The lid measures 1.5" in diameter. The 3.5" tall bottle held 100 tablets, each of which contained 6 essential B vitamins. The bottle is empty now. It looks to be the last one I'll ever have. Apparently Sundown has discontinued the product. Since I don't eat beef, pork, or most other meats, I've switched to getting my essential Bs from Horbaach-brand tablets instead, but they're just not the same. Don't you just hate it when a product you've come to know and love is taken away forever without any explanation? It's happened to me before. Calypso candy bars. Tegrin shampoo. Now Sundown Bs. And of course justice, democracy, and peace. At least I still have my memories the last time I checked. *Sigh*

Top view of an acorn cap. About 1" in diameter. It's separated not only from its mother tree but from the acorn it once shielded. I hope that acorn did ok without its cap, but it probably didn't. I mean, there are lots and lots of acorns in the world, but many fewer oak trees, so it's obvious that the vast majority of acorns never grow into trees. On the other hand, only a very lucky few acorn caps get their picture taken - and even fewer of those get posted online. Now, if I claim I actually found it growing on a dandelion, and anyone actually believes me, I'll feel very lucky too!

Classic yellow plastic 45 rpm record adapter (or spider) that allows a standard 7" 45 rpm record to be played on the standard small spindle of most vintage record players and stereo turntables. Measures about 1.5" in diameter. I remember playing with these as a child and being fascinated by the design and the way they fit so perfectly into any 45 vinyl record even though the two had never met before. Clearly a conscious intelligence had been hard at work to make it so - but whose? And where? It would be many years before I found even a partial answer. In the meantime, I just sat back and enjoyed the music - which I guess is a pretty good thing to do whenever we're faced with any of life's thus far unanswerable questions.
