Excerpt from Rutgers University Senate resolution calling for a Mutual Academic Defense Compact. The excerpt reads: "BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Rutgers University Senate urges the President of Rutgers University to formally propose and help establish a Mutual Academic Defense Compact (MADC) among all members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, under this compact, all participating institutions shall commit meaningful funding to a shared or distributed defense fund. This fund shall be used to provide immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement;"

This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

Yes. If DHS can barge in, say your visa was revoked, be told you have a green card, say it's revoked too, and then disappear you so that neither your lawyer nor your family can find you, then all the guardrails are gone. There is no policy, practice, or law protecting anyone.

It's all a fucking game to these people.

This whole country wants bad things for others more than they want good things for themselves.

A6: My work in the Digital Democratic Dialogue Project has really pushed me on this question. Youth are communicating their histories & perspectives & desires w their peers and yet still grasping at what a world of autonomy & liberation & justice could be - because it has never been yet #literacies

On an entirely different level - reached astonishingly deeper insights

A5: For me, there is a balance to be struck between processing unique struggle of this moment & remembering this is the culmination of a long historical trajectory of struggle. We can be reading the latest think pieces & we can be learning from 19th century community organizing efforts #literacies

The show really drives home the point that making art together is synonymous with making a world together. There is a traveling symphony that performs Shakespeare after society has crumbled - not because of any literary tradition but because of the power of story to bridge past, present, and future

A4: I say this all the time - every teacher is a civics teacher. And I know that as #literacies teachers we are in a particularly powerful discipline to help students think beyond the world as it is to the world as it could be because our job is centered in expression and imagination and language

Have you watched the limited series?? I think it is so much more powerful than the book - it takes so many more incredible leaps!!

A3: Sometimes we feel that to be engaged in civic literacies we have to be working with texts directly related to the election. But that is not the case - we can (especially if we work in communities where employment is precarious if we discuss politics) relate any texts to civic ends #literacies

Also, I am rewatching Station Eleven. Everyone, DO NOT get me started on how this limited series (streaming on Max) is the most powerful artistic statement on community, memory, art, and living after the worst has happened. I will literally talk about it until the end of time #literacies

A2: But I refuse to cede #civics to narrow instruction about institutions and structures of the world as it is. I see civic literacies as the moves we make in relation with each other to experiment with a world as it could be. It is embodying ways of being that we are still learning #literacies

A2: As an ELA teacher, it took me a long time to fully embrace the idea that I, too, am a civics teacher. The disciplinary silo-ing is real, as is the idea that civics is about normative political structures. Civics as a term has a lot of baggage, right? #literacies

A1: As someone who seeks to explore critical paradigms of empathy and #literacies discourses across difference, I am still working to figure out where to go from here.

A1: I just returned from #NCTE24 and I somehow felt both the heaviness of this moment & the lightness of solidarity at the same time. My students are struggling and I'm struggling but I'm also working to clarify my strategies and purpose moving forward #literacies
