I am just noting that NZ National confusion over Iran is deeper than just the serious Prime Ministerβs leadership failure.
I lost track of the number of parliamentary questions National filed to try and stop a Kurdish refugee & critic of the Iranian regime when Behrouz Boochani sought NZ asylum

itβs such a good read and there is so much for students to learn from - itβs really thoughtful, self effacing and quietly inspiring - what makes it very enhancing is the continual focus on how to make the change you want to see in the world, happen -itβs not all about him but it is about strategy

I canβt tell you how much lβm enjoying @london.gov.uk βs Breathe: how to win a Greener world. In the midst of a leadership crisis in NZ, at a time when it feels that cynicism & focus group politics dominates over genuine commitment to change, itβs so refreshing & helpful-canβt recommend it enough.

Their behaviour as an opposition at the time deeply shocked me - it was a relentless barrage of questions that in my view amounted to persecution - it was deeply concerning in my view

How could the U.S. strikes in Iran affect the world's oil supply?
Despite sanctions, Iran is one of the world's major oil producers, with much of its crude exported to China.
Here's our first story about the U.S. strikes on Iran and impacts on global oil markets for @npr.org π§π»π’οΈ
With @camilareads.bsky.social
(NB these days I'm helping w oil coverage, my old beat was oil, But I still cover climate. Roughly 70% of planet-heating gases come from burning fossil fuels)

One thing that has been overlooked in megaministry commentary and with MfE specifically is the withdrawal of funding and policy dev on waste streams, waste minimisation. Itβs really important work and NZ stats on landfill, e-waste, lack of recycling infrastructure are frankly, embarrassing.

Anger over plans to abolish New Zealandβs dedicated environment ministry
Critics say proposal to fold department into a new βmega ministryβ will dilute accountability and put nature protections at risk
It makes no sense to rush into a giant centralised government department that merges environment into housing/transport etc. it creates huge transaction costs, taking NZ back years in effective climate and environment action, losing focus, accountability & skills www.theguardian.com/world/2026/f...

Cartoon. Title: βBoysβ Tripβ The image shows a flooded landscape, with hills, trees, a dead cow, and a car plowing through the muddy floodwaters. In the car are Deputy PM David Seymour, NZ First leader Winston Peters, and PM Christopher Luxon. Seymour is saying, βWeβve gotta be realistic - we can adapt. Well, the ones that matter canβ Winston Peters is saying, βItβs climate hysteria! Itβs just a bit of rainβ And Luxon, who is driving, says, βHey, anyone wanna hear my Spotify?β
More extreme weather more often. What do our leaders think we should do? In a word, not much.

I totally get that we canβt expect local communities to pay the full price of these climate related costs through rates but central government canβt push costs off their balance sheet on to local government and then also pretend those councils can cap rates - itβs so troubling and irresponsible

I agree and Thatβs why I think we should ALL be ashamed about this - I donβt honestly care who people vote for as long as we start supporting sensible thinking about long term planning and funding beyond emergency management in these islands we call home facing more & more severe storms
