I understand that fully. I wonder if I could do a hybrid of both. Maybe not the action exactly, but maybe had the character reflect on what got her to this point? So there would be a recap but a slightly heightened state of emotion?

This is very helpful. I usually have a forward with the catch up on some things while setting the stage for the next book. I was considering changing it up this time and shoving people into the action from a later chapter. But it's book 7 in a police procedural series, so I am torn.
Hey readers, do you prefer:
1. a forward that drops you into the heart of the action from a later chapter?
2. OR a recap/reminder of where the character has been in previous books?
