Title Slide:
An intro to fast fashion waste, delivered by Ani...

Scene 1:
The central character ani is standing in front of an animated huge pile of clothes saying:
β€œPeople buy so many clothes millions and millions every single year. In fact we actually have too many to wear. Also lots of people don't look after them very well: if they get stains or holes most people just throw them away. But where do they actually go?”

Scene 2:
Ani is now standing in front of an animated world map. As she talks about different places images appear shown in [text] as follows:
β€œWell, they end up in big piles in other countries all around the world. Some of them go to countries like Kenya, in Africa and others end up here in Chile which is in South America [Red pin appears on the map]. This is the beautiful Atacama Desert in Chile [a photo of the desert covered in dumped clothes appears in the background]. But it's being destroyed because it's full of clothes that people don't want anymore. But when the clothes rot away or get burned, they cause lots of pollution, which is really bad for the environment, wildlife and people too.”

Scene 3:
Ani is now standing in an animated living room. The screen is split showing Ani to the left and a photograph of a white t-shirt on a hanger to the right. She has a lightbulb bouncing next to her head and explains:
β€œLuckily because you are all amazing eco-fashion superheroes, you will learn some fun ways to make your clothes last longer so you don't have to throw them away. Today we will be learning how to decorate our clothes so they will be just like new again…”

I've had a lot of interest in the animated cartoons I create for my PhD practice (primary #DTEducation) so I thought I'd share a teeny sneak preview of one focusing on #FastFashion waste.
As usual introduced by Ani, with a new & improved voice - she's so cute!

Enjoy!

The pupils learned all about the impacts of dyes in the fashion industry and had a super fun tie-dye activity - Mixing up vinegar mordant, making their very own turmeric dye bath and transforming an old cotton bed sheet! They plan to use these in a future sewing project.

It was so wonderful to see my PhD resources being used again for real-world learning in a real (non-data) classroom, well, school hall actually! I had a fantastic time with three classes of Y4 pupils (90 in total!) at Whitchurch Primary School today!

When you've got a thesis to write but also recently adopted 4 new rescue hens & need to supervise the chaos and seemingly never ending drama of the existing hens. Thank goodness I invested in an electric blanket and a wifi booster!

Why a global Korean craze is making seaweed more expensive Black, crispy, often flat and square, dried seaweed is growing in popularity - but also in price.

One of the highlights of visiting the US was finding tons of these in all sorts of flavours in supermarkets (but hardly any vegetables) & presenting at Yale of course!

That reminds me I need to stock up on Selwyn's laverbread...local seaweed always tastes better!

A photo of activity sheets which feature a comic-strip style cartoon documenting the journey of our clothes. There are two piles of completed worksheets. The first is exploring garment worker exploitation and the second explores the impacts of chemical dyes. The comics have speech bubbles which the pupils have filled in with emojis to communicate how the story made them feel and led to discussions about how to make it better.

A photo of a sunset over the Welsh countryside taken from a beer garden. There is a wooden table with a pint of beer in the centre and another to the right of the photo. The sky is mostly blue with some whispy clouds, while the sun is right orange with a glow around it as its just about to set behind the hill.

The outcome is not the same thing as the process. Just because learning results in changes in memory doesn't mean that retrieving information is all you focus on. Motivation matters! If you want children and young people to love learning you have to help them understand that it's joyful. ☺️ #EduSky
