It's not often that the professional and personal stars align in this line of work, but this move also brings my partner and me much closer to family — something we're really excited about. Feeling very lucky on all fronts and looking forward to starting this next chapter.
At the same time, I'm thrilled to be joining the political science department at LMU. Joining such a deep bench of identity politics researchers, as well as contributing to the department's new minor in applied data analysis, is a dream come true.
I'm so grateful to my colleagues and students at Colorado State. CSU has been a wonderful place to begin my career, and the broader political science community in Colorado has also been incredible. Moving on will be bittersweet.
Some personal news: I'm moving! After two great years at Colorado State University, I'll be joining the political science department at Loyola Marymount University this fall.
Considering doing some version of this! I'm so curious: does the choice to sit in the back and surf seem like it's stigmatized for your students? Are people taking you up on this option?
Excited that "Race, Gender, and Nascent Political Ambition" is now out in @bjpols.bsky.social. W/ survey of white, Hispanic, and Black American respondents, we show primary gap in nascent political ambition is not between men and women but between white men and the majority of the polity.
Just say women. This is taking forever.
i also work in a "bespoke concrete chamber" (office building)
New paper in PNAS: Your homicide risk follows you around the country. If you’re born in the historically violent Wild West, Appalachian Highlands, or Deep South, a higher risk of violent death trails you wherever you go. 🧵1/14

Aside from losing many Democratic seats, Black representation in Congress will probably drop from around 14% of seats (nationally representative) to maybe 7 or 8% (not representative)?

Of all the news in this NYT survey of sitting federal judges - incl 47 of them think the SCt is mishandling its emergency docket - maybe the biggest is that 65 sitting fed judges (37D, 28R), folks circumspect for a living, responded to a NYT survey. Stunning. And a sign that something is very wrong.
if all games were like this I would be better at games
(try it! it's a nice way of testing the reliability of your conceptions about the electorate)
The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.
Just in time for federalism week. Ugh.

Someone please kill me right now.
The White House is taking new steps to undermine every international student at our universities.
It has approved a new rule restricting student visas to 4 years max. That's not long enough for PhD students, or about half of undergrads, to finish their degree.
Likely to enter force within days.
What is required for someone to be an American? 30% of Republicans say being White is very or somewhat important. www.pbump.net/o/what-makes...
historical comparison: in my 2004 survey, 10% of respondents said being white was very or somewhat important for being American vs. 18% in this YouGov survey. also, please keep putting these questions on your surveys!

New paper. What happens when a presidential candidate steps way out of line, not only with the public, but even with his own voters? And on a highly salient issue? Candidates typically don’t do that—they’re too strategic. But Trump isn’t. He’s good for social science. 🧵
This error keeps popping up, this time in NYT
In reality (Fig. 1), the US has ~1.1 times the police officers per capita of the OECD median
The error stems from the fact that the US has uniquely decentralized federalism (you need to count multiple levels of govt) and much more private contracting
Love @goodauth.bsky.social generally and this fantastic writeup by @egojunk.bsky.social specifically! What a perfect resource on descriptive representation for my REP students — simultaneously an approachable introduction and a cornucopia of links for those who want to dive deeper 🤩
If you pay attention: everything they say they don’t like for Black people: affirmative action, diversity hires, quotas, identity politics, ideological litmus tests, they are trying to mandate and enforce for white people.
We have had nearly two decades of panic about Free Speech on Campus and not a single case, not even the ones they made up, were as bad as what's happening now
In my Intro to American government class, I spend an entire lecture teaching students the case law on student speech and their rights to free expression and assembly on CSU's public campus. A student from my class just lost their visa. I can't in good conscience teach this lesson anymore.
Students at CSU are losing their student visas for participating in protests supporting human rights in Gaza. The national headlines may be all about the ivies, but the Trump administration is violating students' First Amendment rights everywhere.
Thank you @landgravephd.bsky.social and #BarneyFordLab for having me!!
