Many congratulations to Patrick Chindandali, who successfully defended his MS last week and deposited the final version of his excellent thesis today! Congrats, Patrick!!!
Our Introduction to Oceanography class took a 5-day field trip to The Ocean, visiting some spectacular spots near Big Sur and Monterey. Some major storm systems battered the coast while we were there, so the weather was.... epic. But so was the geology, biology and oceanography 🙂.
Do you use AI/ML methods in your Earth and environmental science research? NAU is hiring multiple positions! Check it out and apply! careers.nau.edu/jobs/assista...
Thousands rallied in Flagstaff, Prescott Valley and at nearly a dozen other demonstrations against the Trump administration across northern Arizona this weekend.
A couple of SES undergrad and grad classes have recently ventured to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado to learn about fundamental geological processes that have shaped this spectacular range. The fall foliage wasn't bad either :)
Fun afternoon of science on Saturday at the NAU open house in the Flagstaff Festival of Science! SES students and faculty showcased everything from volcanos and earthquakes to insects. Thanks to our amazing students for sharing their knowledge and to everyone who stopped by!
Many congratulations to SES Prof @rengellia.bsky.social , who was awarded the prestigious @agu.org Asahiko Taira International Scientific Ocean Drilling Research Prize! www.agu.org/honors/taira

SES PhD student Grace Ward has been participating in a research cruise in the Tonga-Samoa area to pick up ocean bottom seismometers that have been deployed on the seafloor for 20 months recording earthquakes. They picked them all up! #nau_geology #saloongeo sites.google.com/msu.edu/salo...
New paper alert! New research from former NAU PhD student Emerson Lynch, SES Prof @rengellia.bsky.social , and colleagues demonstrates that some upper plate faults in the Cascadia subduction zone are very active, with important earthquake hazards implications. Check it out! #nau_geology
NAU SES scientists just finished 11 glorious days of lake coring and glacial geologic mapping around Turquoise Lake in Lake Clark National Park, western Alaska Range. Good weather, hard work, and epic landscapes => an unforgettable field season. #NAU_geology, #NAU_environsci, #NAU_climate
Myself, @kdmorell.bsky.social, @djshillington.bsky.social, and Rob Witter (USGS) used an SSA community grant to host an Alaska Subduction Zone workshop in conjunction with a USGS meeting in January. The community grants are a great option if you're looking to fund a workshop/training. ⚒️
The budget bill passed by the house would dramatically increase the national debt because huge tax breaks for the wealthy will cost much more than 'savings' from cuts to essential programs Let's hope the senate has the sense to fix this.

May 1 is NAU's giving day, and we are raising funds for an endowed professorship in Paul Umhoefer's honor. Paul was an amazing scientist, dedicated educator, and remarkable human. If you (like me) were lucky enough to know Paul, please consider making a donation! @nau-ses.bsky.social
The National Academies Committee on Solid Earth Geophysics is hosting a meeting on Marine Geophysics on May 28. We have a great list of speakers/topics, so it should be a great meeting. Join us! www.nationalacademies.org/event/44626_...
