The Carney doctrine, in theory and practice Canada's strategy of appeasement is both a moral disgrace and a grave strategic error

Canada's unqualified endorsement of the US-Israeli attack on Iran shows us what the Carney doctrine actually looks like in practice: a foreign policy built on transaction and an orientation towards Washington built on deference and subordination.

It feels so antiquated that customer service lines still give you the option of listening to hold music while you wait. "Hit 1 for modern contemporary music, 2 for jazz, 3 for easy listening...". Sure hope they pick up before the 1:15 zeppelin to New York boards.

I am 37 today, and thus have finally entered my late mid-thirties. Fortunately, 40 is still several decades away.

Checked in on the NDP leadership race and the future of the Canadian left with @lukewsavage.bsky.social

With the centre-left vacated by the Carney's Liberals rightward shift, where should the NDP position themselves?

The cult of leadership is a failed model.

That’s why our campaign made the deliberate choice to launch with bold solutions that address the everyday emergencies facing Canadians.

Because this campaign isn’t about Avi — it’s about all of us. This is how we build power and win.

I had a great conversation with James Nicholson about Canada's impulsive embrace of AI boosterism and the dangerous Silicon Valley ethos that's largely driving it.

For @jacobinmag.bsky.social, I sat down with @avilewis.ca

Charles Taylor endorses Avi Lewis for NDP Leader. Quote: "Avi Lewis is a principled and compelling leader in the fight for economic, social, and environmental justice. He offers clarity, conviction, and the ability to communicate in French, which is key to uniting Quebec and Canada around a shared purpose."

Charles Taylor is one of Canada’s most important thinkers and an icon in our party.

He kept the NDP flame alive in Quebec for decades, and his values guide our campaign: building a country worthy of the everyday working-class heroes who keep it going.

His support means the world to me.

I certainly wish the platform wouldn't allow these accounts, but cursory glance suggests that none of them really make any money to speak of — either for the platform or themselves. (No check marks to be had in any of the accounts named here, meaning they all have under 100 paid subscribers).

There are fountains of wealth being generated in this country. But that wealth isn't trickling down to working people. It’s all stuck at the top.

Our 'Tax Plan for the 99%' takes on the corporate hoarding class – to redistribute wealth and raise the floor for all of us.

"the vision at the centre of Carney’s speech potentially starts to look more conservative in its implications. In effect, the pragmatic posture he describes is the one so far embraced by his own government in the realm of foreign affairs"

Interpreting the Carney Doctrine Toward a new progressive internationalism or a new conservative realpolitik?

Mark Carney's intervention in Davos has elicited a considerable response and won plaudits from some unusual places. But how exactly should we interpret the speech and what might it signify? I have some thoughts.
