time it doesn't even occur to me that writing from their perspective is a hurdle. Like, sure, there's always stuff to streamline and express better, and emotional journeys to untangle and understand better, and I'm not saying my skill always gets up to my imagination/expectation but 😄

writing in their voice. Sometimes I have characters who are very different from me, and it is pretty difficult and I do feel like I have to improve in making them as well-rounded as the rest. But I do notice when they aren't, I think, and I try to think about them more after and add more layers.

#SFFChat I gotta say it's not very hmm...conscious on my part? I think I tend to write characters who are "like me" on at least some level so there's a thread of connection. And then I just try to make their world and situation as vivid for myself as possible, to know as much as I can before I begin

With regards to reading, I guess I prefer characters I can empathize with, but many times, sympathy is enough. So it's not that I have lived experience with their perspective but the writing manages to immerse me so much that it really doesn't matter. That's one of the wonders of reading!

#SFFChat I usually write in deep third person or first person, so, a lot. Usually it feels to me even the plot can only happen to that specific person & their perspective, history, and personality color the style, the pacing, the things we hear about or not, everything. Or at least that's the goal!

I haven't encountered bears (or polar ones) outside of cartoons and the occasional movie/book to have much of an opinion of them. Real ones sure seem terrifying tho
