A red lightship with 'Calshot Spit' written on the side is shown at sea with distant land and a liner sailing away in the far distance, all against a sunset sky backdrop
Calshot Spit lightship; a painting of mine from 2021 which sold at the RSMA exhibition that year.
This ship was stationed at the approaches to Southampton, and is now sitting outside the Solent Sky museum.

An oil painting of the ironclad warship HMS Warrior, depicted backlit; under sail and steam on a blue ocean.
My picture of HMS Warrior at sea; this might have been my first attempt at painting backlit sails when I made it in 2021.

The sequel to my previous post, this painting shows Queen Mary leaving Southampton on the ship's maiden voyage.
This was quite a complicated scene to reconstruct, with only a few grainy shots from the wrong angle to indicate what was going on.

Queen Mary's first approach to Southampton, 1936.
This shows the new liner passing Calshot Spit seaplane base, heading into Southampton. This is an older painting of mine, exhibiting with the RSMA in 2020.

HMS Dreadnought at sea, 1907. Trying to give a sense of presence and mass to the ship that revolutionised warship design for years.

P&O's Britannia departing Southampton. I made this ahead of my exhibition at the South Coast boat show, and was playing around a bit with colour and plein air influence in studio pictures.

Thanks :) It can be tricky, but if the symmetry is there then sometimes you can get away with a few errors
Another Ocean Village plein air. This was painted on a fairly overcast day, but I liked the way that the large yacht in the background took over the scene. The foreground boat is a static bed and breakfast.

An oil painting of the post WW2 battleship HMS Vanguard; shown dressed with flags whilst participating in the 1953 coronation fleet review. A large number of ships take up the background including the carrier HMS Eagle underneath a cloudy sky
HMS Vanguard at the 1953 coronation fleet review.
Oil on canvas, 18x24.
Behind Vanguard in the centre of the picture is the carrier HMS Eagle, with HMS Surprise on the far left carrying the queen.

In 2023 I exhibited at the starting village of the Ocean Globe Race. Here are a few of the pictures I've made since that show Maiden, sailed by the first all-female crew to win a round the world race.

Quite fun to see, I've not actually done a direct comparison like this before. On the left, my first water-mixable oil painting; on the right an oil of Cutty Sark, a picture that won the ArtMarine prize at the RSMA's 'Afloat or Ashore' competition.
Town Quay Marina, Southampton
I painted this on location over a couple of days (plus one day in the middle when it stayed totally overcast and I had to give up)

An oil painting of the cruise ship Balmoral docked in the port of Southampton, depicted in misty morning light with bright colours. A resupply ship comes alongside whilst Mayflower park and the buildings of Southampton are visible in the background.

Sailing ship - 20 gun 6th rate HMS Sphinx - at sea with dolphins swimming alongside.
HMS Sphinx at sea in the company of dolphins; painted as something of a cheerful antidote to the more sombre battleship pictures. This one is currently available at marineartists.com

Oil painting of the ship 'Celandine' passing underneath the arches of the QE2 bridge
Drawing of the ship 'Celandine' passing underneath the arches of the QE2 bridge
My most recent commissioned painting: the Ro-Ro ship 'Celandine'. The brief was to show the ship passing under the QE2 bridge (the Dartford Crossing) with Purfleet visible through the arches.
