For further reading about trade books and their fit within UPs, check out these quick reads from
@aupresses.bsky.social
ask.up.hcommons.org/trade-press-...
The difference between trade and academic books is not always easy to discern, but the key typically lies within the book's intended audience. Is the book going to reach a wide audience (topically or by way of its writing style)? Or will it resonate most w/ those in the academy?
A text box graphic defining the term "Trade book" as "Trade books are books written for a general audience and have the potential to reach a wider market. Unlike a standard monograph, trade books are not written for a specific academic or professional audience. Authors of trade books generally write in an accessible style, with less of a focus on scholarly jargon and references, and more on readability for those outside of the academy."
Happy #TermTuesday! ππ
Trade books can be found on many university press's lists, as UPs can publish for trade and academic markets. Many UPs have a regional trade list w/ books specific to their geographic location.
Happy #BannedBooksWeek, everyone! Reading is resistance!
Read a book! Check out your local library! Visit an indie bookstore!
Here are two articles from @aupresses.bsky.social that are helpful to get further information on edited volumes. Whether you're an author, editor, publisher, or just generally interested, you should check them out!
t.co/ZDHPWQPviq
t.co/7DBHMTPQfl
Text box graphic defining the term "Edited Volume" as: "Edited volumes, also known as edited collections or contributed volumes, are books that contain chapters written by multiple contributors on a specific topic.Edited volumes will have at least one volume editor who will manage the details of the publication process in collaboration with the press."
It's #TermTuesday and we're back to talk about edited volumes!
These books are comprehensive volumes that explore a singular topic from the different perspectives of the volume's contributors.
A text box graphic defining the term "monograph" as "a monograph can be defined as a detailed, unified text written by a single author about a specific topic or theme.
Happy #TermTuesday!
Monographs generally comprise a bulk of many university press's lists as they are books based on extensive research, written for an academic audience, and provide a detailed exploration of a subject.
NB: University presses publish a wide array of other books, too!!
Many thanks to all who joined us yesterday for our PAGES Book Club where we discussed WRITE THROUGH IT by @katemckean.bsky.social! And a special thanks to Kate, who joined us in our discussion. We had a blast, and we hope you all did do.
Stay tuned for the next PAGES announcement - see you soon!
TOMORROW! Come join us at noon EST!
We hope to see you there!π
You can register at this link: pupress.zoom.us/meeting/regi...
Interested in joining this month's PAGES meeting on September 18? Try listening to the audiobook! Author Kate McKean narrates the audio (so rad!), and you should check it out.
Exciting reminder: Kate McKean will also be joining us in our discussion at the upcoming meeting as we discuss her book!
A text box graphic defining the term "Exclusive Review" as "When a press accepts a manuscript for peer review, they may request that an author pull the project from other presses if the author has submitted the project to multiple publishers for consideration. This is called exclusive peer review or exclusive submission."
WOW! Happy September!
It's #TermTuesday! Exclusive review can give editors a fair opportunity to consider a project, especially in competitive situations. Exclusive review does not mean either party, press or author, is committed to publishing the book.
You can buy the book here: www.simonandschuster.com/books/Write-...
Or rent it from your local library!!!
ICYMI, our next PAGES meeting just dropped! π₯³π₯³π₯³ We would LOVE to see you there.
Thursday, September 18 at noon EST!
A text box graphic defining "Gallery" as "A gallery (or gallery of images) refers to a group of images that are placed together in a book as opposed to being interspersed throughout the book. When used, galleries are frequently found in the middle or back of a book."
Some books might feature a gallery of images rather than having the images spread out through the text. Including a gallery is usually a strategic decision depending on the project, as galleries can affect production costs & affect the reader's navigation of the text.
