I have tried my darnedest to understand where they’re coming from, but every time they talk about a box office performance from a few years ago like it was just any old time I’m screaming in my head, “Did you guys not look outside and see the world turn into a ghost town?!”

Someone needs to study why Pixar in particular doesn’t seem to understand their Covid era films flopped because the entire world was scared to leave their homes and Disney was throwing them up on D+ after a week anyway.

Kenji is the prime example of character drama that only exists because the script won’t let anyone explain anything like a normal human being. 95% of Kenji arguments would be resolved if he or anyone else just talked.

I want you to understand that means Docter didn’t receive an investor call or a letter from concerned parents to remove the gay stuff. Elio didn’t get the praise he expected at the initial test screenings and he and the new directors he hired decided on their own accord to remove it.

It doesn’t involve investors or parent groups though. He made this decision based on positive test screenings that he didn’t think were positive enough. It’s deliberate.

It should be noted that in the article Docter says they began removing any reference to the protagonist’s queer identity after the first positive, but not great test screenings. So it seems he either overreacted to a lukewarm response or just had a predetermined plan and needed the right excuse.

He says in the article one of the first things they did after getting lukewarm test screenings was remove a lot of the stuff that told the audience the protagonist was gay, then they got more negative test screenings and removed the rest of the references to his sexuality.

That’s fhe head of Pixar saying they did it themselves after getting negative comments at test screenings.
