The reductions in the number of new and competing renewal R01s by topic (based on simple searches in NIH Reporter).

The cuts are across the board: Cancer down 24%, Alzheimer down 45%, Obesity down 29%, Child by 21%.

Transgender was down by 84% but represents only a small number of grants.

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.

Hard not to worry that this isn't another attempt by OMB's Russell Vought to override Congress's power of the purse.

Thanks to the Nature team for digging into this. Apportionment is one of those inside-baseball issues that I hoped never to need to learn about... But here was are.

Proud to be back in DC on Capitol Hill advocating for the importance of NIH and NSF research funding to members of Congress as part of the APA Hill Day. We have seen such advances we need to keep up the support! Thanks to the senators and representatives that met with us during our visit!

Somehow missed this announcement. RFK Jr. has appointed a new chair and 10 new members to the federal Alzheimer's advisory council. Of these 11 individuals I have previously heard of...none of them. One is a neurosurgeon😨.

PA-26-002: NIH Collaborative International Research Project (Parent PF5 Clinical Trial Optional)

More changes at #NIH. Any foreign (even a non-HS) component needs a PF5. US-based institutions who gave sub-awards in olden times should now use the PF5. It looks to be structured like a P01.

Great to meet at AARP headquarters for the Global Council on Brain Health last week as we reset and plan out the next few years. As an original governance member 10 years ago when it began, I’m excited for the things to come! If you want to learn more check out www.globalcouncilonbrainhealth.com

What NIH Staff Can’t Tell Youβ€”And Why That Matters The people who understand most clearly what is being lost at the NIH are also the people least able to say so.

Dr. Ginexi's latest blog states, "Constraint is not the same as consent." My colleagues and I move things. Maybe we move differently from before. Maybe we communicate differently. Please consider our safety. Keep talking with us. #NIHStrong #FEDstrong

It is an honor to be inducted as an inaugural Fellow of @insneuro.bsky.social. The fact that the fellowship supports the Charles Matthews Fund (which supports professional activities in under-resourced countries) is a brilliant aspect to the program. @dornsife.usc.edu @uscpsychology.bsky.social

This will go down as one of the highlights of my career. I was invited to be on a panel on the importance of advocacy at this year’s @ins meeting. It was one of the most inspirational sessions I’ve ever been a part of, and I am so hopeful for the future of the field.

⚑ NEW STUDY ALERT ⚑

Led by graduate student Melanie Leguizamon; financial vulnerability in older age is associated with cognitive reappraisal. This suggests emotional regulation interventions may reduce financial exploitation vulnerability in older age.

It was a privilege to present some of our work aimed at understanding financial decision making and fraud in older age to the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center. The NEFCC might be one of the most hopeful weapons against the growing epidemic of financial fraud of older adults that I’ve seen!

NOT-OD-26-020: Notice of Temporary Extension to Early-Stage Investigator (ESI) Eligibility Period NIH Funding Opportunities and Notices in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts: Notice of Temporary Extension to Early-Stage Investigator (ESI) Eligibility Period NOT-OD-26-020. OD

🧡Good news out of #NIH today.
(1) NIH is extending #ESI and #K99/R00 eligibility to accommodate researchers whose eligibility would have ended during the previous shutdown. Take a look at NOT-OD-26-020. If your ESI status would have ended in 2025, you get an automatic extension through 2026/03/31.

Some good news underlying this. At least 36 awards are in response to previously "expired" Notices of Funding Opportunity.

If you don't believe pushing back and litigation matters, these are real investigators (primarily graduate students at this point) whose careers have been concretely improved.
