As @charliejane.bsky.social explains, it helps make you a citizen of literature!
Preorders from indies encourage the indies to stock and advertise the book to other readers.

We turned away from the light when we invented a way to go online without the computer screaming in warning.
Things that are good (just generally, not specific to now) and thus might cheer you up if you need cheering up:
Anthony Buckeridge's Jennings and Derbyshire books. Sort of Wodehouse for 9 year olds, very funny about the adults as well as the children, and just very silly.

If you thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail anytime after 2002, you hiked on rock stairs that I built during the summers of 2001-02. This involved digging up huge pieces of granite, flying them through the woods on a winch line, slicing them with a rock drill, & fitting them onto the hill like a puzzle

This is interesting! I get aesthetic chills strongly, but neither husb nor any of our kids does.
(I also cry easilyโfor sadness, happiness, pride, anger, really any strong emotionโand wonder idly if theyโre related bc both physical manifestations of emotion)

I wish people would stop commenting on how fast I walk, with my rollator. It's always a blatant episode of disbelief, of suspicion, of the ableist "hope" I'm "getting better".
No, this is just my natural pace and the entire point of the rollator.

Looking at social scientists and STEM folks worrying that AI is going to decimate the employment prospects for their fields, it's comforting to know that my field was already decimated using time-worn artisanal techniques like funny math and telling us our work isn't important or valuable.
This sketch sending up the Danish language--which Norwegians & Swedes mock relentlessly for its bizarre sounds--was shown to me by another expat when I first moved to Copenhagen in 2010. Over the ensuing 9yrs I lived there (& learned Danish), it seemed MORE accurate.

literally your customer base was 90% parents of young children who want a good future for their kids in which they can be free to be themselves, no matter who they are. you told those people to go fuck themselves. they won't be back

I understand the instinct to donate to orgs that are helping trans folks flee red states but let's not forget about the orgs that are still fighting for trans folks in red states.
like this isn't 2012, there are no national queer rights orgs who are flush with cash. Everyone I speak with is dramatically cutting their budgets. And red state queer orgs are always fighting uphill on a shoestring budget.
My challenge to you today is to google a red state queer org and donate.
We are counter-programming the State of the Union with a fundraising telethon featuring everyoneโs favorite Bluesky posters doing short presentations and sketches on stuff they are passionate about. Will stream on YouTube starting at 8:30pm EST

Edward Gorey is a legend. Like Maurice Sendak, produces the most wonderful little nightmares for childrenโnot too bad but that give you a lil frisson of something naughty.
There will be studies in future that show video interactions with deceased loved ones via AI causes brain damage on par with concussions. We have hundreds of thousands of years (millions!) of evolution around mechanisms for grief. They are supposed to live on in our hearts and heads. Nowhere else.
I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.
If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.
If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.
The older I get, the more anniversaries of deaths and society-wide catastrophes I acquire, the more my interior calendar gets filled with periods of foreboding and unease as the sad dates near each year. Wishing you peace and a set of healthy sinuses.
What this technology is going to do is not end higher education, but it is going to undo so much of the baseline work on accessibility by pushing overworked professors to take things back to offline modalities, in person timed exams, keeping tech out of the classroom, etc.
a tux cat (buttons) in an open black ikea dresser drawer. she just jumped right in. so olympics!
@cpsc.gov is on vacation. everyone post cats doing product safety crimes
Iโve knitted off and on for 20 years. Sometimes, thereโs just a knot with your name on it. But my early knots consumed most of a skein. Now theyโre more manageable. Patience and knowing when to frog (undoing some/all of what youโve knit)) & starting overโtwo of knittingโs many valuable lessons.
If you leave it in a skein, it will be fine for a while, then--suddenly--you'll have an impenetrable, enormous knot of yarn. Speaking from sad experience.
In the 1800s, a slave owner purchased over a dozen people in Georgia and set the foundation for his familyโs generational wealth
Generations later, a railroad company owned by one of his descendants is using eminent domain to seize land of Black farmers
Workers have begun restoring the slavery exhibit in Philadelphia that was removed by the Trump administration
The Brattle theater is playing what they call the Ultimate Double Feature: โwe play the first movie up until the point when the characters enter a cinema to watch a different filmโ, then play the entirety of that 2nd film, then finish up the 1st film. (via @tcarmody.bsky.social) [brattlefilm.org]
These 3-yr drops are stunning. Absolutely stunning.
New Orleans: -55%
Baltimore: -60%
Philly: -60%
Chicago: -40%
Buffalo: -55%
Pittsburgh: -50%
Albuquerque: -40%
Newark: -40%
San Antonio: -55%
Portland: -45%
The media coverage of these staggering drops, tho, is staggering in its relative silence.
How murder rates have changed in the 25 cities (min 250k pop) that had the highest murder rates in 2022 and have complete data reported for 2025 in the Real-Time Crime Index:
We are deeply saddened by the news of Henrike Naumanns passing. In May 2024, she participated in ยซUnpredictable Collaborationsยป, the kick off symposium of @zkk-zurich.bsky.social. She showed how cultural analysis and artistic practice can merge into much needed cultural critique. She will be missed!
