It's fine (indeed, essential) to change priorities and funding schemes but failing to maintain continuity of funding opportunities is irresponsible and shows UKRI do not care about ECRs or the financially-strapped organisations that they need to deliver their research programmes.

Many of us scientists in the Global South have been sciencing forever with limited resources, higher costs for infrastructure and reagents/consumables, high bureaucratic burden, no overheads, and still contributed to the generation of knowledge. We’ve developed adaptive strategies.

A graphic with a blue background and a cream-coloured circular textbox with parsnips on each top edge. The text reads the following: The longest parsnip ever recorded was 655 cm long and is recorded in the Guinness World Records! Growing the longest parsnip is a tradition associated with British country fairs, with some specialist gardeners even planting their parsnips in drain pipes to get them to be as long as possible.

The text reads the following: Parsnips are very good for you, particularly because they are rich in micronutrients - vitamin B9, vitamin C, potassium and manganese. These nutrients help to keep your body functioning properly, keeping you strong and healthy. They do have quite a lot of starchy sugars in them, so should be consumed as part of a balanced diet.

The reality of my current place in my PhD timeline has slapped me in the face. Went nominal today, didn’t intend to and didn’t expect to have to do it. What does this even mean? That I’m being slowly kicked out of uni? I’m not doing well with this inevitable change 🫠
