Construction started on the bridge on March 31, 1937. As part of the contract to build the bridge, local workmen had to be used and no Asian person could be employed in construction. Construction cost $5.8 million. The bridge is 1.8 kilometres long and stands at a height of 111 metres.

The Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver was officially opened to traffic.
