I always value my moves based on whether theyre a clear downgrade on what the master did instead before I care too much about not finding the exact right move

I totally get it, its one of the worst aspects of guess the move. But i think its important to remember its not about scoring the best numbers its about making sure your moves are roughly equal in value to theirs, and making sure that you found/learn the critical plans and tactics

After, sometimes annotations could tell you an idea that could affect the next moves as well. But if you can catch on to the idea its usually better than having it be told to you

There's just something about chess that it's able to fill me with such immense, blinding rage that I don't experience anywhere else

This one is gorgeous from today's game between Aravindh - Aronian in today's Grand Chess Tour. Requires seeing a lot of Black's responses to know the answer but it's a goodie! #chesspunks

It's a good idea for sure, to me it felt like the Rook was worse than the Knight so it made me focus more on making sure it was doing more than just staring at h5 ๐Ÿ˜„

Had a blast studying e4 again in a serious way for the first time in over a year. Can you guess White's best move? It was on my radar for a millisecond, but I ended up going for the simple g3 instead #chesspunks

25.04.2025 15:18 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I missed e4 so much. I know I'm bad at it compared to 1.Nf3/1.d4 but it's a much more fun experience

25.04.2025 12:55 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

That's awesome! My blitz was always much worse than my rapid chess, so I wouldn't worry about it if you're lagging behind as well. I think the biggest amount was when I finally hit 1000 blitz but at that point was around 1400 in rapid myself ๐Ÿ˜… Speed is easier to improve than understanding!

So I think one thing that's important for players under ~1500 isnt just looking at positions where only one move wins, but coming up with a plan when many moves do. In this position from a game of mine, white has a winning advantage for multiple reasons. But what plan would you choose? #chesspunks

25.04.2025 12:32 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You aren't a real chess player unless you've gone back and forth deciding between different openings to the point of madness

Almost every one of his games his opponents go nuts and try to attack him and he defends very effectively, its a treat!

Yeah thats fair, from my perspective the tromp player always has something in mind against 1...d5/g6 etc., I usually find that the move d6 challenges a lot of systematic repertoires in a weird way, and the trompowsky feels close to a system to me which may be far off, but i know nothing about it lol

23.04.2025 16:06 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

genuine question: what do trompowsky players even do against 1...d6? I cant imagine them being the players that go into e4 but also what else lol #chesspunks

22.04.2025 23:07 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Been messing around with lots of d6 positions, 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg4 Ne4 3.Bf4 d6?! 4.f3 Nf6 5.e4 g6.

Came from a game I played today here: www.chess.com/game/1376799...

First thought is to look at Rae1, c4 or even f4, definitely trying to blow up the position as fast as possible. Something in my heart wants to look at g4 but I'd only consider it for a few seconds in a classical game ๐Ÿ˜…

White is up a full tempo on a normal kings indian position, but the extra move is Bishop to f4, which turns out to not be so great. How can Black minimize the damage? #chesspunks
