I guess what I'm saying is, a lot of people told me grief gets easier with time. I haven't found that to be true. I've just found that as time goes on, grief becomes contextualized alongside joy. The joys pile up, but the grief remains, exactly as potent as it was before.
I was 26 when Dad passed. 10 years later walls of grief still hit me out of nowhere and unexpectedly and wrack me with the kind of anguish I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
My father was a wonderful human. He and I spent so many beautiful memories together, making up for a period of time where we had very few. To the end he was one of my best friends, my biggest supporters, and my most ardent champions.
All I knew then, and all I know now, is sometimes in my worst nightmares or lowest points to this day I hear "Oh sweet, I think he's gone." and I'm instantly back to that moment. The entirety of my heart shattering. And having no goddamned idea what to do next.
I couldn't have known that truly there wouldn't be many things looking up for a very long time. I couldn't have known that only a few short days later we'd discover Debba Curtis' own cancer, and start the whole process again for Mom.
...when we decided the humane thing was to take dad off life support and let him pass away comfortably, February 3rd is the day it became real. It's the day I left the hospital, drove to his house where I would sleep alone for the next few months, and begin the process of whatever the hell came next
I turned, and it was true. Less than 3 feet away from me, he had passed away silently. Just me, and him, and the hum of hospital equipment.
While the real moment that changed my life had come a little less than a week earlier...
At about 9:30 that morning, I was quietly working on my very first producing project, sitting in a chair next to my dad's bed. He had been asleep for a couple days at this point, we were all just waiting for the end.

Our profile went live July 2025 and, to our surprise and excitement, we matched in August - just six weeks after our profile launched. We’ve spent the past five months preparing to welcome a baby girl into our lives. Last month we flew to Seattle and waited. Unfortunately the outcome isn’t what we hoped for and we head home tomorrow without a baby and with a canceled placement. We can never begin to imagine the situation a pregnant person is in when they seek out adoption and while we are so sad we will not be parenting this baby, all we can hope for is that they have a wonderful life filled with love.
