Small but significant! With a length of only 7โ8 mm, the harlequin fly Chironomus ripariusย is a crucial bioindicator for freshwater ecosystems. Burak Bulut from the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre investigates how temperature and time shape the evolution of Chironomus riparius and presented his work in our last IQCB seminar. Read more here https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.05.28.656541v1.full. In our last seminar, Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow Prof. Dr. Calvin Tadmon from the University of Dschang, Cameroon, used mathematical models to explain the dynamics of the Ebola virus. These models simulate the virus's spread and identify important factors, such as temperature, rainfall and transmission routes. Read more about his research here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1468121824000580.
