Tbh I think the "it's for kids now" trope is cope for ppl getting older. It was for kids then too you just were a kid. Like the early pokemon games are not -that- complicated or deep in either mechanics or plot. I rlly think most hate from adults of new pokemon is just cope for ageing.

I think it's so divisive because it's not a movie interested in presenting idealised kink but exploring community and trying to bring it to life. The movie is written across with toxicity, wholesomeness, bonding, confusion, exploration etc and the truth is there are Rays in every kink circle.
Honestly I think this movie painfully observes how a lot of UK kinksters, especially outside of online puritan discourse, come to like be involved in scenes. It was filmed and presented like a horror movie at points but unfortunately just think that observes so much about like UK's cis gay culture.
