We keep hearing "Company X ruined social media site Y" and yet we still are hoping that at some point a "nice company" will make one instead of pushing for social media to be run by non profit NGOs with democratic principles

This is btw. not unique to Mastodon. This was already the case with forums before or Guilds in MMOs, etc.

The internet idea of "democratic platform" needs to let go of the capitalistic idea that "on paper" everyone can just make their own ignoring material reality & instead be collective ownership.

The main spin Mastodon supporters do is framing the Instances as a "democratic" solution while the material reality is that very little people have the finances, tech knowledge & labor to run one.

So while it sounds good on paper it will always create a lot of small Elons pushing their own ideas
