Worthing Green Party members outside town hall Extraordinary Council meeting called to discuss โ€˜postponingโ€™ May 2026 elections

As a @worthinggreens.bsky.social councillor Iโ€™m proud to have stood up for the right to have local elections in May. Shame the Labour administration didnโ€™t. Elections are not a pragmatic โ€˜nice to haveโ€™, to be sacrificed if government sets an agenda underfunded councils might not have capacity for.

Bristol smashed affordable homes records in 2025 In the first half of the year, 286 affordable homes were completed - 54 of which were built by the council

So proud of Bristol's Green councillors delivering more affordable homes that Bristolians desperately need - Bristol is now the best council outside of London for building affordable homes. More to do but this is a brilliant start.

In today's Budget, the Chancellor spoke about building the economy โ€œbrick by brickโ€ but left out the very foundation that underpins it all: nature.

The same Government that promised to restore our natural world appears instead to have wiped it from their agenda.

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to request that the Speaker recalls Parliament from the summer recess immediately to permit an urgent debate on the UK governmentโ€™s response to the Israeli security cabinetโ€™s decision to prepare to take control of Gaza City, and the broader plan recently passed by the Israeli cabinet.

This is not a routine foreign policy disagreement. The reported security cabinet decision, together with the stated principles to โ€œprepare to take control of Gaza Cityโ€ and to impose long-term security control and demilitarisation, signals a major escalation that risks further catastrophic civilian harm across Gaza. Such a plan is yet another declaration of intent from Netanyahuโ€™s government to commit breaches of international humanitarian law. The government must treat this with the urgency and seriousness that the possible breach of treaty obligations demands.

Under the 1948 Genocide Convention the UK has a clear and binding duty to both prevent and punish genocide. Where there are credible grounds to believe that actions or policies by a foreign government risk causing genocidal acts or facilitating conditions for genocide, the UK must urgently assess its legal obligations and consider immediate measures to prevent further harm.

Introduce targeted sanctions on all members of the Israeli cabinet directly responsible for approving plans that foresee a prolonged occupation or other measures risking large-scale civilian harm in Gaza.

Use the UKโ€™s diplomatic weight with allies to press for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access, the safe release of hostages, and an urgent international inquiry into allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The risk that the UK could be failing to meet its obligations under the Genocide Convention is an issue that demands parliamentary accountability and public scrutiny. The consequences of delay will be measured in countless innocent lives lost.

For these reasons I request both that you write to the Speaker today asking him to recall Parliament, and that your office publish the steps you intend to take in response to this grave development.

I am, of course, available to meet to discuss this further.

Yours sincerely,

Ellie Chowns MP
Member of Parliament for North Herefordshire
Foreign Affairs Spokesperson for the Parliamentary Green Party
