I'm also not clear on how any of this does anything about the large lecture hall scenario โ the paragraph just before talks about things like quizzes and asynch discussions being most impacted, which are ways to engage that *aren't* sitting in a big class listening to the instructor!
I definitely had this with my large undergrad class last semester โ especially in terms of office hour attendance and questions on the discussion board, and anecdotally I'm hearing this from a lot of others. I don't think it's just you!

For what it's worth, I'm having very similar struggles over here in my fluid mechanics class (though obvs manifesting in different ways from a writing-heavy course). Hard to tailor my teaching if I don't get signals about what is and is not landing for my students...
