A win for transparency. βœ…

Labor has dropped proposed FOI changes that would have added fees and made access to government documents harder. I opposed this bill because FOI must strengthen accountability, not reward secrecy.

Tony Abbot takes on Mark Carney in an intellectual fight … oblivious to the fact that he’s completely out-gunned.

All this painful read shows is that Abbott places sycophancy towards the US far ahead of sovereign conduct. He espouses easy & wrong instead of hard & right. #auspol

How do billionaires manage to accumulate such obscene wealth? Because of this πŸ‘‡

The mega rich simply buy political parties and policy outcomes to entrench their power and status while wages fall and life for millions of Australians gets harder.

It's time we taxed them.

I want Australian citizens home from Syria. Can you honestly say that those women were not under coercive control when they left? Surely some? Despite leaving, they must be able to bring their children home. They said they are happy to do whatever it takes. Let them come home.

Little surprise then that the Parliamentary Budget Office has found that 59% of the benefit of the CGT discount goes to the richest 1% (or those earning more than $362,900):

with chart showing the richest 10% get $17.7bn from the CGT discount while the rest get $4bn.

The CGT 50% discount not only distorts the housing market it is also the most inequitable policy you could dream up. (Which is probably why John Howard and Peter Costello did it)

Measles was wiped out in the U.S. 25 years ago and now we’re already past 1,000 cases in February because vaccination rates dropped below the safety line. This is what happens when public health gets gutted and people stop trusting basic science.

Labor seems to think it is politically smart to go along with the cruelty, stupidity and racism of the Coalition on children and their mothers stuck in Syria.

But why scrape the barrel, when the latest polls suggest the hard right of politics is getting so crowded?

Time to end the lobbying protection racket The number of lobbyists seeking to influence the federal government has soared, yet they’re bound by secrecy that stifles honest business.

Politicians are outnumbered by lobbyists in Parliament House 15 to one; on sitting days hundreds of lobbyists roam the halls in Canberra, meeting with Ministers to influence government policies.

My Clean Up Politics Act would shine a light on lobbyists’ activities.

Exclusive: Robodebt architect remains employed in a senior governance role in the public service Scott Britton was a national manager of the customer compliance branch in the Department of Human Services and signed a June 2014 minute that first detailed how robodebt would work.

From me: The architect of the Robodebt scheme, who was told it was unlawful even as he delivered it for the government, is still employed in the public service, now at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. And in a senior governance and risk role. www.crikey.com.au/2026/02/20/r...

The political effects of X's feed algorithm

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.
