We had a perfect little snowstorm yesterday. It came and dropped about 15cm in a couple hours then cleared right up. Made for a nice sunset walk.

My first batch of whistles. I went pretty far in the direction of ocarinas but will steer back towards emergency whistles in the next batch. Also testing some black and white slips to paint them.

A little vase from the September firing. It's very crusty from being right at the front of the kiln. I'm never decisive with these pots about how much to clean/sand/grind off, but with this one I'm inclined to leave it.

So, in solidarity, I'm going to start a small studio project and see where that takes me: clay whistles from my beautiful local clay, but with a bit of a wider theme. Pics coming soon.

So what to do? (Aside from voting for better representation and calling out bullshit where I see it, of course.) I've been super interested in how people are using whistles as tools peacefully (harmless and legal) and effectively (cowards in masks HATE having attention drawn to them).
...and is so far away. And then I remember that my own MP advocates against immigration (not exactly an urgent topic in Terra Nova - The Peninsulas), and actually tried to turn a Christmas parade in Trinity into a platform for detention and deportation. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
I am super proud of, and not at all surprised, by the amazing democracy and human rights work being done by regular folks in Minneapolis (and elsewhere) right now. At the same time I've struggled to express and practice solidarity with my friends and other folks there, especially since it seems...
It was a place of cooperation, knowledge sharing, collaboration, generosity, and discussion. Which is to say that if your main goal was to cause terror, chaos, and division, and to provoke a reaction, there's probably not a better place you could send a mob of untrained, heavily armed thugs.
...more work than I could do alone. So a bunch of folks showed up to work on bikes with me, and then a whole bunch of other people brought us food and drinks so that we could work all day, and then a bike collective came and donated all the tools, parts, and materials that we needed for the work.
...take part were extremely diverse - long-time residents and newcomers, trans and queer people, kids and elders, students, people experiencing homelessness, and working class families. I was there for a week, but within a few hours the gallery was full of bikes and it was obvious that there was...
One city where there was an overwhelming result was #Minneapolis - it was at a grass roots artist-run centre (Art of This) on Nicollet Ave, and if that sounds familiar that's the street where Alex Pretti was recently killed, less than one kilometre from the gallery. The people who came to...
This is a little overdue since I was busy with my show the last while, but better late than never: In 2007 I travelled throughout Canada and the USA doing a work called Bicycle Rehabilitation Project where I went to art galleries and offered free bicycle repairs and tune-ups to folks who wanted them
A few detail shots of pieces from my exhibition. It opens at the Craft Council on Saturday!

This week I'm heading to St. John's to set up my exhibition Weight at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. It's all new work in ceramics and crochet that I've been working on these past few years. If you're in the area I hope that you'll be able to join me.

That's a beauty
It's my own glaze. A matte glaze base with two colour variations layered over each other in various ways. I call it Rain Drizzle Fog.
A customer ordered a teapot so I made ten. Heres my two favourites:

A little ice in the harbour. The only ice I'll abide.
It's from "a lot" to "none" in Port Union
I've still got a few spots left in my winter pottery course beginning next week. We'll be doing wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, decorating and more. Register at www.wildcovepottery.ca/collections/...

I'm a little ashamed to say I'm just getting around to cleaning some pieces from the last firing in September. The best ones always take the longest.

Still cracking pots. Just a month until my exhibition at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

I made this piece in 2005, and sadly it's just as relevant now. The only difference is that I made this while living in Montana, and felt welcome to speak my mind then as an artist and as a foreigner. Now I wouldn't dream of going back there, and I'm sure I wouldn't be allowed even if I wanted to.
