I really don't like long books. In my latest essay on SubStack I talk about why. I'd love for you to read it, & while you're at it, tell me which big books you thought were awesome. Asking for a friend. 😉

Really interesting read. The Harry Potter Generation Needs to Grow Up www.nytimes.com/2026/01/26/o...
Sometimes an album just strikes you, and if you're anything like me, you immediately do a deep dive into the lyrics. Here's what happened to me when I dug out Frightened Rabbit's The Winter of Mixed Drinks and did the analysis.

Writing a poem and cooking a special meal are two creative acts that have a lot in common.
Both involve craft and alchemy. Both end with the release of the finished product for other people's pleasure.
Read often, read weird stuff, then cheerlead like hell for others to do the same. My latest post contains mentions to @backlisted.bsky.social, BookBub, and other savory morsels.

"The parallels to the present are obvious, but they’re not satiric. The deaths are real, and the taking of citizen liberties is a truth that is ever spooling out in greater quantities. There is no comedy now. Satire comes with time in order to ripen it."

My latest post is up on SubStack! With the events happening in Minnesota, I took a second to reflect on literature, Huckleberry Finn to be precise, and how it can inform our current moment.
I'd love for you to read it!

Great book haul this year! This will get me started in 2026!
So it's been a minute, what with end of summer vacations and the start of my thirtieth school year, but I'm back! Here's my latest post- it's about past trips to Disney, nostalgia, and, of all things, mortality! I'd love for you to read it!

New post on SubStack! A blast from the past: While we were in WDW for a full family vacation, on SubStack I revisit one of our first trips to Disney and the feelings that it engendered. Check it out! open.substack.com/pub/brianstu...

I hate writing workshops. I really do. But I had something happen this summer that may change my feelings toward them. It’s up on SubStack right now. I’d love for you to read it.

Wonderful night in Saratoga listening to two of my favorite writers discuss their work at the Northshire Bookstore! Congrats Paul O’Brien and Jack Rightmyer!
This is my 30th last day of classes. Wow. I’m letting that one sink in.
Check out my new post! We've all heard the trash talk about teens, I'm just not sure it's entirely warranted.

Soggy rider
Went for an hour ride tonight. Halfway out, at the farthest point I could be away from home, the skies opened and it poured. I had to stop once under a tree for survival. Struggled all the way back. When I made it home the sun came out. Of course.
Still got the ride in, though.
I started a new writing venture! Check it out at: open.substack.com/pub/brianstu...
Is it me, or is Chuck E. Cheese just the minor leagues for casinos?
