BREAKING NEWS ALERT EPA fires science advisers 01/28/2025 07:24 PM EST Acting EPA Administrator James Payne has ousted all members of two of the agency's most influential science advisory panels, giving President Donald Trump's administration the opportunity to reshape them with its own appointees. In an obliquely worded email sent late Tuesday afternoon, Payne said a decision had been made to "reset" the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee and Science Advisory Board "to ensure that the agency receives scientific advice consistent with its legal obligations to advance our core mission." EPA will seek nominations in the coming weeks, Payne added, with all members encouraged to reapply.
BREAKING: Acting @EPA Administrator James Payne has fired the agency's science advisors.
They will be replaced in order to, he says, "ensure that the agency receives scientific advice consistent with its legal obligations to advance our core mission," whatever that means.

Candles and body spray, here I come!
The world has changed before and, when it did, it wasnβt because a president, a prime minister, a CEO or a celebrity decided it had to.
It began when ordinary people β people of no particular power, wealth, or fame β decided that the world could and should be different.
"An extra 2.3 million people in European cities could die as a result of extreme temperatures β both hot and cold β by the end of the century if countries do not take action to mitigate climate change, according to a study that modelled the effects of rising temperatures."

I don't know who needs to hear this,
but "scientists don't know everything and have been wrong before"
does not mean that a random-ass conspiracy theory with no evidence
should be given the same respect as the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and expert consensus.
The head of the next global climate summit says China can easily substitute the USβ withdrawn leadership on climate action.
So perhaps all the center-left pundit types who joined in the DEI pile-on were not in fact responding to public opinion, but were merely laundering their own reactionary instincts in a way that resolved cognitive dissonance?
As I think about the shock waves & rush to protect those at immediate risk, I also think about the longer need to build social fabric for climate action. Climate change amplifies & intersects w so much: risk from extreme heat/floods/hurricanes, health, food, water, housing affordability, conflict.

Afternoon, Bluesky!
When I moved to DC in 2019, there were ads touting the climate change benefits of taking public transit.
One, which I had to walk by every day, claimed climate change made sharks bite people more. That's nonsense. I investigated.
It turns out this ad was misquoting some of *MY* research!

In a new paper, we look at how we can allocate the global warming space instead of carbon budgets and translate it to warming-equivalent emissions budgets.
Noteworthy, many developed and advanced developing countries have already by far exhausted their fair warming budget. (1/2)

Stumbling across amazing new people, and being inspired by their gentle or overt insistence on a better future, can occasionally make it worthwhile! But also a healthy 1:1 ratio of naps to refreshes helps, too.
We donβt generally start campaigns with disruptive direct action.
That can get a lot of attention, but we usually try to talk to the politician who decides the issue, first.
Then, if they donβt listen, start to do things like leafleting and petitions and small protests. Then bigger events.
If youβd like to know more about the extremely valid philosophical basis for this admonition, wellβ¦ thatβs exactly what my last publication was about. Give it a read!
Not a perfect analogy, but in one sense I think DeepSeek may be the solar power of computing: relatively cheap, relatively simple, and effective--and thus a huge threat to the people making huge money from the status quo.
