Egad, I am such a hockey nerd. Had to locate the rules & regs for Paralympic Sled/Sledge Hockey. FYI, should anyone be interested: www.paralympic.org/sites/defaul...

Am thinking that Hollywood dude who said no one cares about opera and ballet probably spends most of his time in front of his mirror gazing lovingly at himself as he rehearses his Oscar acceptance speech.

Good idea. (Hadn't thought of that. It was just so odd. Will include some screenshots too.)
Reading Martha Wells' NETWORK EFFECT. Enjoying it (of course!) but also fascinated to see how she writes a novel-length story vs the shorter, earlier works. Still a lot of action, but deeper takes on the characters. Not just entertaining but more emotionally satisfying.

Looking forward to the para ice hockey matches at the Paralympics. Haven't seen this type of play before & am intrigued. The athletes use a specially designed sled that lets the puck pass underneath them! ππ₯

When I worked as an indexer & editor for APA's PsycINFO database, we covered a wide range of disciplines. One of our people was fascinated by all thing neurological & created a concept-to-thesaurus-term reference list for us. It was a lifesaver! π§
Things don't have purposes, as if the universe were a machine, where every part has a useful function. What's the function of a galaxy? I don't know if our life has a purpose and I don't see that it matters. What does matter is that we're a part.
Love how my beloved spousal unit refers to the final review of the draft of my forthcoming academic mystery before I send it off to its distributor: "Measure twice, cut once." π
Yep, and invariably there is that last, one, insidious missing or incorrect period, comma, or whatnot. βοΈ
Conflicted about posting this, frankly. There are people who don't or can't attend conferences who could still participate & offer this sort of support: authors, librarians, bookstore owners, and, of course, readers (i.e., buyers of books). Not looking to flame anyone, just pretty disappointed. ππ
I pre-ordered a book, posted my excitement when it arrived, read much of it, posted about individual stories, saw the post asking folks to nominate the book for an award...but I can't as I didn't attend the 2025 conference or register for the 2026. Cliquism? Authorial elitism? Bummer either way. 1/2
I'd love to nominate CRIME INK: ICONIC but It looks like only folks who registered for Bouchercon 2026 in Calgary, or who were registered for Bouchercon 2025 in New Orleans can nominate titlesβi.e., bouchercon2026.com/anthony-awar...
Here's what I mean by swaggering swag, folks! π (I believe the super-deluxe level gets you everything.) While the project has been funded, it's not too late to add your $ and receive the goodies along with the book.)

We saw! HOORAY! π€©
The book I'm holding is THE ARRIVAL by Australian artist, writer, & film-maker Shaun Tan. THE ARRIVAL, a stunning work of illustration, insight, & empathy. More: www.shauntan.net/arrival-book.
A READ poster shows me, a tall, white person with short white hair, wearing a bright floral silk jacket, a teal tunic, olive green-brown trousers, and black heeled boots. I wear glasses and smile at the camera as I stand holding Tanβs book. I am superimposed over a planetary globe. Text on the poster reads βREAD: Itβs the journey to places youβve never imagined.β Photo Credit: Background photo of a blue and black galaxy is by Aldebaran S via Unsplash.
A while back, I was the online academic librarian for Graduate Studies and Research Methods for APUS. It was an intense job but fun too. My fellow librarians were the best! Weβd occasionally get a little sillyβusing the ALA's READ Design Studio app we created our own READ publicity posters. ππ
There's swag & then their swaggering swag! Check out W.J. Whitley's (@pandemoniumpress.bsky.social)

Vinyl stickers, letterpress bookmarks, service pins & patches, challenge coins!
My theater & bookstore background helps at times as I design promotional swag for my forthcoming academic mystery. It's an adult book but I can imagine faculty brats (I was one!) hanging at my fictional college bookstore...and wouldn't it be neat if there were a coloring book w/the college mascot? π
Doing a quick, ostensibly final, scan of the publication file for my forthcoming academic mystery novel. ACK! A grievous typo! "Complimented" instead of "complemented." Oh woe and alas! But I caught it! π₯
Twenty-some years ago I reminded my MLS students to store their libraries' card catalogs (not throw them out). Major power outages, I said, mean all your records will be inacessible & perhaps lost. You'll need those cards then. Feeling like a seer these days.

Someone just posted about something they did "back in 2014" as if it were The Ancient Times. Maybe I'll need to shift the marketing for my forthcoming book to "historical academic mystery!"

Handcrafted wooden street library with 2 shelves holding a wide range of titles.
Handcrafted wooden street library with 10 exchanged titles from previous image. Mostly fiction it looks like. (Photo taken when we went out to shovel snow.)
First time this has happened in the 2 years of our wee #StreetLibrary Someone exchanged 10 books for 10 books! A great variety too. Thank you kind person. π

Love the cover art! Congrats.
1st draft, 2nd draft, all drafts! π
Although the individual Tumblr post tags aren't noting it, I'm assuming the appearance of Le Guin's THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS in Pluribus show has inspired the flood of Ai/Estraven character art. Curious about show now...and I need to reread the book. It's been a few decades.

Am assuming that once my forthcoming book is out there I'll start receiving some decent scam emails. π Right now all I've gotten are one-sentence things saying they'd like to talk with "the author of this website." All bookclub senders, bots I presume.
Writing the Acknowledgements section of my forthcoming book had me quite emotional. Gratitude is such a tender and fulfilling place to be. β€οΈπ«
π Need to decline but thanks for the compliment. I like to support my writing colleagues or support authors when I can though.
Oh wow! Super good essay that speaks to exactly why SFF is so important to the world right now. Might also be seen indirectly as making the case that social sciences in general have much more in common with SFF writers (& critics) than is commonly understood.
π’The Kickstarter for W.J. Whitley's rollicking alternative history novel, THE HIERARCHY OF ANGELS goes live 3/3. WJW, a letterpress printer & award-winning sculptor in mixed media & electrical assemblages, has some great swag too! @pandemoniumpress.bsky.social
