Echoing the MIT Mystery Hunt idea -- many many wonderful and diabolical puzzles, designed to be solved by teams of people over a long weekend, so they should keep a solo solver occupied for some time. A more digestible (but excellent) version of that might be the Puzzle Boats, pandamagazine.com.

Hey, English language fans: this is an extremely clever journey back through the past millennium of the written word. Most people hit the wall around 1200 or 1300.

True! I have a whole set of associations with the phrase that overlaps with my parents' attitude towards medical care in general (they avoided it, and stayed healthy until they didn't), so my use of the phrase is in the ballpark of how Brits use it but might be idiosyncratic.

I am, and I do now and then, but only because I picked it up from my parents (born in the UK, moved to the States before I was born). I more often heard it as "in rude good health."

You say there's a football play worth 7 points? That seems unlikely.

Random icky news of the day: I'm in the Epstein Files. (He received a link to an article I wrote for the Rolling Stone website in 2015, "8 Grammy Moments You Couldn't See on TV.")

I just checked and I learned that I'm in the Epstein Files too. (He received a link to an article I wrote for the Rolling Stone website in 2015, "8 Grammy Moments You Couldn't See on TV.") Totally random and totally ick.

Screen capture from "Bette Davis Eyes" video with Kim Carnes and three musicians, one of whom (the bassist, maybe?) is wearing a vest, a skirt, and a hat with an enormous white feather.

I was watching the video for Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes," and now I want the complete life story of the guy in her band rocking a hat with an enormous feather.

I spent some time with a random sample of fifth graders this week, during which I discovered they knew exactly two things about Star Trek: 1. The Spock hand gesture. 2. "George Takei was in it."

I was at a showing of The Birds where the audience got the giggles early on because of Tippi Hedren walking on the beach in high heels, and then everything seemed ridiculous instead of scary. Not ideal, even though I understood how it happened.

From Wikipedia entry on "JetBlue flight attendant incident": "Steven Slater, a veteran flight attendant, announced over the plane's public address system that he had been abused by a passenger and was quitting his job. He then grabbed and drank two beers and exited the plane by deploying the evacuation slide and sliding down it."

In 2010, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater agreed with you:

Also, because I know some of you are writers and other types of artists: your creative work is a valuable asset and you should name a literary executor in the event of your death (which, obv, I hope doesn't happen for a long time).
