write a movie that's supposed to rebel against or deconstruct a "traditional disney musical"?
I know this is a lot of ranting for something we don't know about yet but hearing this from a DISNEY STUDIO, with Disney's current record on musicals to boot, is insane to me.
So like are they just shitting on the concept of musicals and/or trying to do their take crudely like Shrek?
Or is this about disney musicals' association with princesses?
Domee Shi previously did Turning Red so I imagine the latter, but she's also never directed a musical, so why would she be-
The "traditional disney musical" is just broadway! It's more popified for the kids, but it's just the way musicals are structured and executed that's proven to work for decades!
If anything modern disney has swayed from that, focusing more on spectacle than narrative for a lot of numbers.
The "traditional disney musical" is what gets me because either they're saying
a) the modern disney princess movies are traditional musicals that need to be culturally rebelled against
b) they're still talking about the rennaissance movies as if they're still worth lampshading in 2026

Part of me always figured being overweight would play against me while transitioning. But almost two and a half years in, you can tell it's still very much doing enough to let me rock some cute fits when I feel like it.
