I observed a napoleonic war historian doing a demonstration on the brown bess and he was of the opinion that they were grown at the side of the face to protect from musket blasts from the powder pan igniting. This avoiding side burns to the face. One of many theories I’m sure.

My grand uncle had a copy of this and I read it every time I visited. He was captured at St Valery in 1940 along with most of the division. This book and his stories inspired a life long passion for history. I now have his copy as my most prized book.
