Heartbroken to learn that my friend, godfather of Canadian sociolinguistics, and Miles Davis biographer, Jack Chambers has moved on.

Is anybody else in academia *really* struggling with motivation at the moment? With the combination of deep restructuring, the dreadful labour market and gen AI, it feels like the walls are closing in. Some of us were hoping to work for 20 more years!
Probably an unpopular take, but the reason the idea of students loans being a 'scam' is gaining traction is because of the complete failure of the media to explain/interrogate how the system underwent fundamental changes under the 14 years of Tory government. Only Martin Lewis can claim any credit.
Birmingham are 'listening carefully to questions and concerns'

This is a headline you would expect on GB News, not the BBC. Tax rises still to take effect were announced at the appropriate time, and no new taxes were announced today. How is that fooling anyone? Why is a BBC journalist insinuating bad faith?
I make no comment about the said ITV region 😄
Probably my favourite of the cable exclusive channels, especially in its SelecTV days.
The glib Ur-Toff who crashed the UK
I've started a new site where I'll be writing periodically about TV, films, music and the like.
To begin with, ahead of the 100th anniversary of his birth: Kenneth Williams and 1980s television - a story of commitment, triumph and upholstery.

With live backing from Dave Arch and his orchestra!
This is what I did on Valentine's Day 🤩
Was there also a 'CASH IS KING' sign?
I had a version of this when I noticed that one of Charlie Stubbs's chairs in Coronation Street had been taken from the set of Granada Tonight, the regional news programme.
Growing up, the main impact the Winter Olympics had on me was the discovery that a not insignificant number of Italians in the north of the country speak German as their first language.
I also briefly had Richard Burgon's mobile number through CULC 🤣
I think I once ended up on the same table as Wes one lunchtime in the Robinson canteen
"Do you paint the canteen every weekend?"
Matt made the monthly newsletter of the School of Arts and Media at Salford, where I work and share a corridor with some of his former undergraduate lecturers :)

🤯🤯
"Well, I say ran the country, a shifty-looking, perma-orange, cognitively declining nepo baby presided over the gunning down of innocent citizens, but that's US democracy for you!"
On this day in 1988, 'The Wind of Change', the final episode of Hi-De-Hi! was broadcast.
Gian Sammarco as Adrian Mole
A Happy Birthday to Gian Sammarco. 56 today.
My window for the same next week is....12 hours 45 minutes 🙃
Instead of renting a hotel room for 2 hours I hear amorous couples are booking tickets to see MELANIA for complete privacy
2026 : le fascisme est en train de s'installer, et les médias de gauche ne voient toujours pas où est le danger dans la légalisation du suicide assisté et de l'euthanasie.
Mais réfléchissez deux seconde à l'usage qui pourrait en être fait !
