I'm unsure how people really think people were downplaying a virus that can kill you, make you go blind, wipe out your immune system for years, and oh yeah come back and kill you a decade after you thought you'd shaken it.
A reasonably large, velvety American Staffie mix named Rosie is cuddling a tall, long, rangy kitten named Garbanzo. Rosie's fur is very short and neat and sleek, and she's an appealing blue-and-white coloration with soft light brown eyes, a cold nose, and a happy wag for everybody. Garbanzo's fur is fluffy but dense and short. He has a lean angular build and a narrow face and might have Oriental Shorthair ancestry. He has a loud, musical meow and loves to put his paws on the people he likes. They are both lying on a queen size human bed with red cotton sheets. Rosie has Garbanzo tucked against her belly, under her front left leg. Her muzzle rests gently on his head and neck.
Another picture of the previous pair Rosie and Garbanzo snuggling. This time, the sheets on the human bed are blue. Rosie is lying on top of her dog bed on one side of the bed, and Garbanzo is lying where the human would sleep normally. They are both sleeping on their sides and their noses are touching even in slumber. They look very content and comfortable, and clearly love each other.
