The Inner Workings (Left): This panel tracks two specific "compass neurons" in a mouse’s brain over 8 weeks. Whether the mouse is in a square, circle, or star-shaped room, these two neurons act like a synchronized pair: they always point in opposite directions (see the bottom "butterfly" loops). While the entire compass might rotate when the mouse enters a new room, the relationship between the neurons stays rock-solid over many weeks.
The Big Picture (Right): This "ring" visualization shows a large group of neurons. Each dot represents a single neuron’s favorite direction.
The Inner Ring (Week 1): Shows the initial "map" the brain created.
The Outer Ring (Week 5): Shows the same neurons over a month later, without any visit of the environment in between. The colors don't just form a smooth gradient; they match up precisely between the two weeks. This proves that the brain’s internal compass is remarkably stable, "locking" its coordinates in place so the animal can recognize the same environment even after weeks away..

In a paper published today in Nature, a team led by neuroscientist Adrien Peyrache at The Neuro shows that the brain's head direction system forms long-lasting orientation memories that are anchored to specific environments.
