The problem isn’t the medium, it’s the mode of consumption. We need to be advocating for offline means of engaging with the artform, even simply pushing for digital audio players and MP3s as opposed to algorithmic streaming models is a massive step in the right direction.
It goes:
- bombard children with endless algorithmic feeds of content since the earliest stages of consumption
- children become young adults and burn out on social media, for good reason
- they’re raised to associate art as just another branch of the content tree, so they abandon it altogether
Digital minimalism will be to the 2020s what wellness culture was to the 2010s; a pipeline into far extreme right ideology.
Do not do materialist analysis regarding how your favorite artists got to where they are unless you’re looking to be disappointed.

i tell young musicians all the time that they need to fight the urge to smirk and shit on fellow artists whose work doesn't aesthetically align with theirs. genre exclusivity died in the late 2010s, we are fighting a war against those who don't want either of you to create work period.
