Slow start to the 2025 list, after 2 weeks of no birding around new year due to the lovely flu. Thankfully back on my feet now. Current list up to 41 species. All birding done so far has been whilst driving, from the office window, or in the garden.
Bring on 2025, with new locations, and a target of 200!
Happy New Year to you all!
Iβve visited multiple new places this year, had some interesting birding experiences, and ventured out in some awful conditions, but it was all worth it.
In total, I have seen 34 lifers this year, some being Long-Tailed Duck, Long-Billed Dowitcher, Red-Necked Phalarope, Bairdβs Sandpiper.
Had an amazing year birding this year, finishing on a total of 158 species!
Last year, I finished on a total of 81, with only local birding. This year I decided to aim for a target of 120, and I am very pleased to say Iβve smashed that target.
Current Total: 160
Pleased to say I have hit my 120 target this year, with some of my highlights including:
- Long-Billed Dowitcher
- Long-Tailed Duck
- Eider
- Red-Necked Phalarope
- Baird's Sandpiper
- Pectoral Sandpiper
- Glossy Ibis
- Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
- Bearded Tit
Merry Christmas all! π
A few photos of the Black-Necked Grebe at Belvide a few months ago.
This has been a lifer for me this year, this was my second sighting, with the first being Groby in Leic
Wheatear {Oenanthe Oenanthe}
This was my first UK sighting of a Wheatear, back in September, at Rutland Water. An absolutely stunning bird, and was quite a brave one, quite happily walking up and down the path even with people walking by.

So please I managed to see this Long-Tailed Duck at Thornton Reservoir, Leic recently!
This was number 157 on my 2024 list! And a lifer! During this visit, I was also able to add a Siskin to my list, a first for the year, as well as 34 species in total this day.

Another lifer for the year- the Northern Pintail. I recently spotted one at Rutland Water, as well as this one at
Slimbridge. This is a particular species I have wanted to see for a while, however after many attempts I was finally successful!
Thank you! Itβs been quite the year!
