I propose the following policy solutions: clear communication from national and European officials to the public about the tradeoffs they face in current geopolitics and reforms to the European Council that will centralize decision-making and keep its procedures democratic. 4/
Properly utilizing these advantages requires member states to confront threats from the far right, unify a currently divided European voice, and urgently address how demographic strain is setting European fiscal policy up for failure. 3/
Despite all the pessimism and dreary headlines, Europe has a lot going for it compared to the recent past: a single currency*, more and stronger democratic institutions, and geographic expansion without the Iron Curtain. 2/
