International Women's Day 2026 - Shelter England The housing emergency in England disproportionately affects women, leaving them without the foundation to reach their potential. We're fighting to change that.

This International Women’s Day, we’re recognising the women leading the fight for change and calling for the social homes our country urgently needs.

The housing emergency is holding too many women back.

Women are sleeping rough in rising numbers, and thousands more are stuck homeless in damaging temporary accommodation - including with children.

Inquiry into the barriers to delivering council housing - Shelter England The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Council and Social Housing has launched an inquiry into the barriers to delivering council homes for social rent.

Councils want to build. Communities need homes.

So what’s getting in the way?

If you have evidence, experience or expertise in council housing, we want to hear from you. The APPG on Council & Social Housing is calling for written evidence on the barriers to delivering council housing.

Great to hear 🙌
It's something we're talking about internally at the moment. There will probably be similar posts coming out down the line, but we're always evaluating what's the best approach.

Is it job done? No, we don't think it's enough and there's still no clear road map to delivering 90,000 social rent homes per year. But just for today: Great news.

Today is a big moment when it comes to building the social homes we need. £39billion over 10 years is hugely significant after decades of underinvestment. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen...

Our new video flips the narrative and focuses on the real issue.

The failures of trickle down housing policy - Shelter England Trickle down housing policy has led to poor affordability and record homelessness. Our latest report explains why the government must build social housing.

Ever wondered why building more private homes hasn’t fixed the housing emergency? 💭

❌ We’ve been relying on 'trickle down' housing for decades. It hasn’t worked.

✔️ Prioritising social housing delivery would work.

Can you inherit a council tenancy?

You might have the right to take over a council tenancy if you're a relative who lived with the tenant.

Use our checker to find out if you can succeed to a council tenancy. And ask your council or housing association for their policy on succession.

There are a lot of headlines today about housebuilding slumping and questions over the government’s 1.5 million homes target.

The data shows that private housebuilding is slowing. But history is clear: we only hit 300,000 homes a year when councils built at scale.

Temporary homeless housing should be suitable for you and your family.

It should be:
➡️safe
➡️affordable
➡️near enough to travel to work and school

If it’s not and you have a low income or claim benefits, you can get free legal help to challenge the council.
