Snippet from an enquiry about a PhD position. Aren't we all inspired by Errors?

The term "Michael Fischer moment" is applied to public jokes, on any topic, that turn out to be embarrassingly unfunny.

*Reassuringly, ChatGPT notes: "This is a methodologically dated but honest and scientifically valid study." I'm hopeful the journal will see it the same way!

Has anybody seen/experienced something similar recently? Feel free to contact me (confidentiality ensured).

...ChatGPT may have helped them to conjure up these "shortcomings", as some of the points it identifies are very similar to those listed by the "reader". Thus, it seems to become very easy to inundate editors with retraction requests: Just take the PDF, let AI generate a list of... (2/3)

Haven't posted here in a while, and now I'm back with something rather unpleasant: An anonymous "concerned reader" contacted a journal in which a (fairly old) paper of mine was published, alleging several methodological shortcomings and requesting retraction of the paper. I suspect that... (1/3)

Agreed!
Some flaws (e.g., figure duplications) are easier to spot than others (low-quality calculations without "obvious" errors).

RSC Advances retracted several papers recently and a few more retractions happened. I didn't keep count, but maybe about 15?

Can anybody explain to me why #Wiley is doing such a notoriously poor job in typesetting articles?
Nowadays, you don't even get a PDF anymore, and 90% of the "corrections" mean reverting changes that the typesetters have made.

This paperπŸ‘‡ is now retracted (with the authors' agreement): thanks again to the authors for putting this on the table, and hoping the "reviewer" feels ashamed... #researchintegrity

Needless to say that concerns raised on @pubpeer.com (not by me!) were instrumental to achieve these corrections of the scientific record.

Two more retractions have appeared for problematic papers published by Hitler Louis and associates. Journals are slow to respond, but at least some of them do the right thing eventually.

I was just made aware of this. Worst thing is that the cover and "reputable" publisher Springer give the first impression of a serious science book, while a closer look reveals that AI-generated text parts were used without any editing.

That's a very unique format!

At least you chose someone with very distinct social network fame. But maybe go for the more conservative option next time: Angela Merkel.

If I was a qualified candidate with no prior knowledge of German, I'd apply anyway and ask the commission how this could be implemented in real life. Most Germans know that German is not an easy language to learn and I suspect there may be some leeway.

Fortunately, we have dual-use poster walls!
