Hello! I’m the reporter who has been tracking citizens detained by immigration agents. And last night, I noticed something: A lot of them were at the State of the Union, including a number of whom I’ve written about.

Their stories should be known:

It's not a time for speeches or hand-wringing but for collective action at the state level. This will not end with Minnesota.

These are β€œlow enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.

The Trump Administration Can’t Kill Black History Month We don’t need permission from the government to commemorate a complex past.

Last week, my mother took me and my kids to see the school where, 60 years ago, she was among the first wave of Black students to integrate a previously all-White school. We wanted to remind my kids that Black history is not just famous people in textbooks, it is often the people right next to you.

One would think that this would merit an emergency convening of all Blue state governors, Attorneys generals and Congressional representatives. It's a declaration of war on one state which means they'll do it to others too.

Conservatives spent years complaining about ”safe-spaces” and β€œliberal snowflakes” only to turn around and show they are absolutely terrified of ideas they don’t like (β€œracism is bad” β€œgender is fluid”) and willing to use state power to avoid the slightest discomfort.

Unfortunately if this has followed the path of universities acquiescing in advance and paying bribes, it is often the lawyers who are the ones advocating for it. The role of legal counsel in undermining democracy to avoid lawsuits is an overlooked aspect of this move toward fascism.

My mother requested a real ID twice and was denied. The second time I was with her and it was because her birth certificate is from Puerto Rico and included two surnames instead of the one maiden name listed on her marriage certificate. This policy will systematically disenfranchise women.

The Big Chill: U. Of Texas Tells Faculty To Avoid Controversial Topics β€” Forbes The University of Texas System Board of Regents has approved a new policy that directs faculty to limit the discussion of β€œcontroversial topics” in their classes.

The overwhelming consensus of the research done on bilingual education indicates its positive social and academic effects.

This new policy means that if students find that empirical claim controversial it either needs to be eliminated or balanced with xenophobic lies.

"These watered-down ICE policy reforms do not serve as a break from the Democrats’ years-long rightward shift on immigration, but a repackaging of immigration enforcement to maintain the status quo."

New York Mayor Mamdani is breaking his promise on library funding. Fitting that a few days after Valentine’s Day, New Yorkers may be reaching the end of their Mamdani honeymoon. Earlier this week, the Mayor released his preliminary budget for the 2027 fiscal year,…

β€œA tenth of a percent might seem paltry, but library budgets are on a tightrope (they nearly always are) and we’ve seen during previous funding deliberations that libraries need to quickly cut services and hours in response to even the smallest budgeting fluctuations.” lithub.com/new-york-may...

Georgia Is Letting a Railroad Seize Land a Black Family Has Owned For 100 Years Descendants of enslaved people are fighting an attempt to use eminent domain to carve a spur through one of Georgia’s largest Black‑owned farms.

In the 1800s, a slave owner purchased over a dozen people in Georgia and set the foundation for his family’s generational wealth

Generations later, a railroad company owned by one of his descendants is using eminent domain to seize land of Black farmers
