Extraordinary new work from Joan Naviyuk Kane. I always learn something from her poems, always. No matter how many times I read the lines. So dense, so intelligent, so kinetic.

Houses floated away in this Alaska Native village. Now residents want to move Kwigillingok, Alaska, has long grappled with erosion and flooding. Residents want to move to higher ground, further inland, especially after the remnants of Typhoon Halong damaged nearly every house.

Woke up to this excellent roundup.

Hopi Leia, black and white relief print by Hopi artist Sikuyva Dawavendewa. Behind her is a village but in the style of Tatooine's Mos Eisley town, with the two suns as well. The border is also symbolism to rain clouds with rain falling on the side. The graphic is laid over a pale lavender background.

To be fair, circumstances make me more exhausted by the American project than usual and in the words of my 15yo after my 11 parent-teacher-conference-morn b4 teaching yesterday I asked: β€œwas I at 11 and I should have been at 10?” 15yo said, β€œmom, you were at 11 and really you should have been at 16”

I was coerced into watching this over the weekend and it was among the most irritating things to see during flucking Native American Heritage Month; maybe it was the settler who made me watch it and my irritation with that, but nah, it’s like pop culture keeps circling Indigeneity from the outside
