8/9 In my conclusion, I offer 5 alternative strategies. Western Europeans aren’t becoming more authoritarian-these voices are just louder and better mobilized. But if mainstream actors keep amplifying far-right discourse, real authoritarian shifts could follow.
7/9 Susi Meret shows how anti-immigration and even nativist discourse have become mainstream in Denmark, especially among Social Democrats. Yet, this rightward shift hasn’t weakened the radical right or strengthened mainstream parties.
6/9 Martin Bak Jørgensen asks: Have tough asylum rules really cut applications? Data shows Denmark’s trends match the Nordic region, challenging politicians’ claims. Instead of more repatriations, the paradigm shift seems to push immigrants into illegality, making them disappear from the radar.
5/9 Rebecka Söderberg covers Denmark’s “Ghetto Legislation” targeting “non-Western” populations. These policies create insecurity and can increase social divides, showing ethnic discrimination is promoted not only by far-right actors but became “normal”.
4/9 Anika Liversage explores the unique challenges for female refugees, especially Syrians. Stricter policies mean some women tolerate domestic violence, fearing loss of residency. Interviews reveal links to suicide attempts.
3/9 Stinne Østergaard Poulsen’s chapter shows how temporary protection creates ongoing fear of deportation & undermines refugees’ mental health and integration prospects.
2/9 Since 2015, Denmark’s asylum policies have become much tougher. Temporary protection is now the norm, with permanent residency almost impossible. What are the consequences?
1/9 With a delay, finally sharing my edited book (open access) on Denmark’s radical shift in asylum & integration policy-a crucial case for understanding nativism’s mainstreaming in Western Europe. Thanks to all contributors! #Migration #Asylum #Denmark

This is my first post here on Bluesky, though I've been following colleagues and other interesting people for some time. I look forward to becoming more involved and hope to find some engagement on this platform, which so far seems to be a nice place. I hope it keeps this vibe!
Congratulations! Very interesting paper!
